Summary

If you haven't met a Moomin yet, you're in for the most magical fun! The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Tove Jansson's endearing classic, Comet in Moominland, read with warmth (and some lively character voices) by the comedian Hugh Dennis.A comet is speeding towards Earth and nobody knows what to do! Will it destroy everything and everyone? Moomintroll decides to find out. So, with Sniff, he sets out on an expedition to ask the Professor if a comet is really on its way to destroy the Earth. On their journey they meet some interesting people - such as Snufkin the super tramp, and the Hemulen who rescues them from an underground tunnel - and have narrow escapes from such menaces as crocodiles and giant lizards. And on their way back Moomintroll meets the beautiful Snork Maiden and is a changed Moomin for ever after. But what about the comet - and is the World Wiped Out?

Shame about the regional accents!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes. If you read the Moomin book with a child's eye then you'll enjoy them.

Would you recommend Comet in Moominland to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes i would. I'd recommend the book but not this reading by Hugh Dennis.

Would you be willing to try another one of Hugh Dennis’s performances?

No. At least not a Moomin book! His pace and style of reading are fine but his choice of UK regional accents for the main characters was, in my view, bizarre. His use of Welsh, Scottish, and even Cornish accents seemed completely wrong as I've always imagined the characters to have neutral voices to match the uncomplicated world they live in. For a child listening to these stories for the first time these voices it might seem okay.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No. Any film would probably spoil the world already created in the readers imagination.

A joyous little story, spoiled by the narrator

I have only recently in adulthood discovered the joy of the Moomin stories, and this is the first, and still a favourite having read a few more. It is a charming world of adventure with really interesting quirky little characters (I love the Hemulen!)

My only complaint if Hugh Dennis's patronising delivery. The books are written for older children and adults, so the delivery as if talking to a 4 year old is unnecessary and inappropriate. I was also irritated that the only way Hugh Dennis could come up with different voices for the characters was to give them a variety of regional accents. Distinctly unimaginative and very disappointing and annoying.

Absolutely amazing!!!

I really don't know where to start with this audiobook. I have read the book already, but the audio version is simply stunning. The music and the voices of the different critters, the narrator is simply perfect and the voices of the characters are spot on, he is wonderful! Even if you aren't a fan of Tove Jansson (how can this be!?) this is a wonderful adventure. I highly recommend this audiobook, can't wait to listen to the other Moomin books as well!

Lovely reading of a children's classic

I've loved the Moomin books since I was a kid, and I used to have an audiobook version of Hugh Laurie reading Finn Family Moomintroll which I listened to repeatedly because the voices were perfect. I was a bit sceptical about listening to somebody else's interpretation, but Hugh Dennis really brings the characters to life, perfect to listen to with children or when you're just in the mood for a comforting story :)

Almost perfect...

The best Moomin story (in my view) read beautifully by Hugh Dennis. My only criticism would be the narrator's odd use of British regional accents when interpreting the characters. Still, a small price to pay!

A beautiful book brilliantly read, squeaks and all

A lovely rendering of this beautifully imagined and written first tale set in moominland. Hugh Dennis does full justice to the characters, bringing their strange world and Jansen's gentle philosophies to life
