Summary

One of Dickens’ earlier novels, dating from 1839, it charts the fortunes of an honorable young man, Nicholas Nickleby, who has set out to make his way in the world. Dickens presents his remarkably vivid display of Victorian characters and the life they lead, from the generous to the fated to the crushed. Hope springs eternal, however, and righteous persistence brings rewards.

The best narration of any book, so far.

I have enjoyed all of the Charles Dickens books that I have so far download. However none has satisfied me more than this version of Nicholas Nickleby. David Horowitch brings every character to life and enhances the humour contained in this incredible book. There were times when I actually laughed out loud, whilst listening on a bus or through headphones whilst walking down the road. Although I have yet to get halfway through its 38 hours, I consider that I have had more than my money's worth already. Thoroughly recommended.

Nicholas Nickleby

This novel is so well read one forgets one is listening and believes it is all happening about one . Perfect tone with so much feeling . All the characters do believable it is hard to imagine they are all read by one person . Having listened to a dozen Dickens novels , this is the most enjoyable in my opinion because of the strength of the reader .

A wondrous performance

I'm totally in awe of the narrator. I've known and loved the book (and the 7 hour play!) for years. Yes, it's mixed and has some long and some unnecessarily moralising parts. But it's such a Dickensian joy. I imagine Dickens himself performing passages from it. And he could not have done better than David Horovitch. The voices were comical, moving, terrifying. The timing was perfection. I laughed and cried. Bravo!

There Are Not Enough Good Words To Say About This!

Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book by Charles Dickens. So cleverly written with so much humour! and so much emotion. I loved the characters of Nicholas, so kind and generous natured, and his sister Kate too. Loved Newman Noggs, so dry, sarcastic and whitty! Charles Dickens was pure genius and love every book of his I have read so far. The Narrator David Horovitch read this book so brilliantly, such a lovely rich voice that kept me interested all the way though. And his voice for John Browdie!! so funny! Made me laugh so much every time I heard it! Highly recommend this book! And I've shed tears when it ended, which is the sign of such a good book! Thank you Charles Dickens and thank you David Horovitch.

Character after character..

Dickens captures the thinking of men, women and children of all ages . The book is full of the most wonderful characters , Raith Nickleby and Mrs Nickleby being my personal favourites. The narrator does a tremendous job of bringing everyone to life and never repeats the same voice . A great book and a great narrator to do it justice

Five Star Narration

Which character – as performed by David Horovitch – was your favourite?

Smike was excellently portrayed, as was Ralph

Any additional comments?

The narration was outstanding - one of the best I've come across.
