Publisher's Summary

A wryly funny and moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye.

Teen idol at 15, international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor in Ohio uprooted to the wild counterculture of mid-1970s Malibu, where he embarked on his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.

The Outsiders placed Lowe at the birth of the modern youth movement in the entertainment industry. During his time on The West Wing, he witnessed the surreal nexus of show business and politics, both on the set and in the actual White House. And in between are deft and humorous stories of the wild excesses that marked the 80s, leading to his quest for family and sobriety.

Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.

"One of my best audiobooks so far"

Really enjoyed this - very thoughtful, well-written and read, and gets the balance about right between respecting some confidences and telling you some of the more salacious details. As another reviewer has noted, the later years are covered in far less detail than the earlier ones - more on the West Wing years in particular would have been nice.

But I don't want to nitpick. Some audio books can feel a bit of a chore to return to but I always looked forward to getting back to this one. I hope he writes more.

    "Personal Stories Well Told!"

I thoroughly enjoyed this - my first autobiography. His stories are light-hearted in the main with the occasional 'heavy' moment. I would not have been a particular fan of his but having seen him interviewed about this book I thought I would give it a go for a change. His recollections of his fledgling career and the careers of his peers are entertaining and insightful in some cases. I would have liked more on his career currently but in the main I recommend this book - lovely sitting in the car listening to Rob Lowe telling me about his life!

    "Loraine"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and like the Michael Caine biography having the author narrate their work added greatly to my enjoyment. Mr. Lowe is easy on the ear (as well as the eye)! Whilst I loved Michael Caine's chuckles in his narration Rob Lowe's impersonations of other celebrities are quite excellent - Mr. Lowe may just have missed out on selling another of his not inconsequential talents.

    Highly recommended

    "Great Book"

    Great book!!

Couldn't stop listening to this book from the word go. Would liked to have heard more about his time in 'The West Wing' as there is more to the story. Great to hear about his early acting career. I feel this book has only scratched the surface.

    "Loved It"

As this is my first audio book I was not sure what to expect. I downloaded it ready for my holiday thinking it would be perfect for the 9 hour flight and perfect it was. Narrated by Rob Lowe himself, it feels like you are in a room with him listening to his stories. An honest account of some of the key moments in his life from his troubles in his early years in the industry to his days on the West Wing. It does at times feel like he's holding back a bit and he doesn't go into too much detail about some of his problems and addictions. In my opinion it is covered as much as it should be for such a painful and troubled time in his life. But none the less, it is a well put together collection of stories that kept me hooked throughout my travels. I am keen to purchase more audible books in the future but certainly feel that the key thing with an audible book is who the narrator is. Rob Lowe's narration made this book what it is and I believe it would not have been the same if it was narrated by anyone else.

Highly recommend for any Rob Lowe fan!

    Well read by the author.

Deals more with the early part of his career and skims over the more scintillating details. But very enjoyable none the less.

    "Enjoyable"

Wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, biography from birth to present or anecdotes? Rob Lowe just tells stories from his exciting life most of it about famous friends but also about his family. I really enjoyed this book and it was nice to hear the stories in Rob Lowes own voice. Sometimes it feels as if he is bragging and name dropping but i got past that and really got into to the telling of this book.

    "a genuine account"

I didn't think I would ever find myself reading a Hollywood actor's biography but here we are. I am a big fan of West Wing and of course it is easy to be in love with Sam Seaborn. I didn't know what I would find in reading Rob Lowe's biography but it came out beyond my expectations. He is honest, genuine and has lots of interesting strories happened in his life. It was a really fun book to listen to on vacation, something easy and light and entertaining. I also got to realize why I like him so much in Sam Seaborn character. It is not too long and definitely worthed to read.

    "Not bad"

Worth a listen to. It is what you'd expect really, the story of rags to riches the struggles he had in the early years and then some amusing stories about him and other Hollywood actors, no out of the ordinary revelations or anecdotes but I did enjoy it on the whole.

    "Fantastic look into another world"

I did enjoy the West Wing and was to sad to see Rob Lowe's departure.

Other than that I don't know a lot about Rob, nor his films, nor did I particularly follow the media attention he once generated. So I was unsure how much of this book I'd "get". The author does a wonderful job of making his world accessible and of taking us into his experience.

One could feel it was a long list of anecdotes where he meets one famous person after another and then he's working with just about every major star of the last few decades and has met those from the decades before.

But Rob sees a path to his life, he sees the story that takes us through these anecdotes. It's a great book, I was hooked early and enjoyed it tremendously. These are good stories.
