Moving to remote Shetland has been unsettling enough for consultant surgeon Tora Hamilton; even before the gruesome discovery she makes one rain-drenched afternoon...Deep in the peat soil of her field she is shocked to find the perfectly preserved body of a young woman, a gaping hole where her heart has been brutally removed and three rune marks etched into her skin. The marks bear an eerie resemblance to carvings Tora has seen all over the islands, and she quickly uncovers disturbing links to an ancient legend. But as Tora investigates she is warned by the local police, her boss, and even her husband, to leave well alone.
And even though it chills her to the bone to admit it...something tells her their concern isn't genuine.

"Had to listen to the whole thing"
Wonderful scary story which held my attention!
So many things hidden then revealed, well written and read with outcomes that I did not guess, which is a first. Thanks
"Oh dear! Disappointing narration...."
I've only just downloaded this, a few chapters in but really struggling. The narrator has a good voice BUT not for this book. She sounds like she should be reading Agatha Christie, not a modern crime thriller.
The character is supposed to be 33, the narrator sound 63!! And is also incredibly well spoken which detracts from the believability of the story. What a disappointment :-(
As for the story... I'm not gripped. But then again, I'm struggling to get in to it... I hope it improves...
"An excellent if disturbing read"
This book certainly has pace. It is the second of Bolton's that I have read and the second to be incredibly creepy. You do sometimes find yourself wondering if so many things could happen to one person but, as each incident can be explained within the plotlines of the story, it only serves to keep you more on the edge of your seat. There are still times when you find yourself thinking it's all rather improbable but it didn't take away from the enjoyment - if one can say that about a book that has you anxious from start to finish!
"Well paced and well read."
A good quality story that keeps your interest and keeps you guessing. Characters are well drawn. Recommended.
"Good Story"
Enjoyable story, I haven't read/listened to a plot like this one before. I found it hard to stop listening once I had got into the story. I would recommend this to people who like crime novels. The narrators impersonation of Shetland accents was annoying until you got used to it, fortunately the main character did not have a Shetland accent.
