Saints of New York

I loved this. With the fact-based back story of the Mafia I was instantly drawn into the book. The cop is a likeable character without being the cliche 'renegade'. It's dark and twisted but it's fantastic. I think Ellory is a cut above the rest right now.

Ellory has done it again - a gritty tale that uses the device of consultations with a psychologist to tell a tale of now and then. The strands of several stories come together satisfyingly, but not for the faint hearted.

This is my first RJ Ellory book and it wont be the last. If you can get past the first twenty minutes which are quite graphic then it just gets better from there. The naration by Eric Meyers is one of the best and enhances the enjoyment. There is much swearing in the book and it is not for the faint hearted, but this book is one that is part of the real world worts and all. The main character is complex to say the least but he grows on you. The plot moves in many directions, there is the initial murder in the bath, the serial killer, the inter activity with his new partner, daughter, son, ex wife, shrink, and priest. The relation ship with his father runs strongly through the story. This book has it all.

Nice, and at times wanting it to be read faster - gripping stuff. Will look for more by this author and narrator.

I really enjoyed this novel as I have with all that I have read by him even if he has been writing his own reviews on amazon. Great stories that are gritty and do not pull any punches. It is quite amazing that he is British.

I absolutely HATE this book, the main character is obnoxious with no redeeming features, he is rude, selfish and foul mouthed.

the book has a very high rate of unpleasant language - so much so that I am really struggling to finish it. I am finding it offensive and unnecessarily littered with bad language.

I cannot understand the - way over the top - reviews, and regret wasting my credit and also my time.!

If you prefer the old Eastwood, as seen in Million Dollar baby you will hate this book. If on the other hand you think Eastwood was never better than in his Harry Callahan days, this is the book for you. The 'hero' is pretty much a straight carbon copy of Dirty Harry, and the narrator does not want you to forget that, ensuring that everyone sounds like a character from 'Sudden Impact'. I cannot say whether it was the original story or the narrator the annoyed me the most, but together they made for a horrible listen, that will make me stay away from both in the future.
