"Atmospheric and richly entertaining....Political intrigue of the highest order." (The Washington Post)
"The idea of setting a murder mystery on the eve of the Russian revolution is terrific, and Bradby ably captures the urban lawlessness, food shortages, unrest and Imperial decadence that characterize the period." (Publishers Weekly)
"Capivating Storyline"
I thoroughly enjoyed this beautifully read book. The detective element of the plot is brilliantly drawn in the setting of Russia in 1917 and I never guessed 'who done it'. The story is made complete by the well crafted characterisation of the hero, his family and his romantic interest. A good listen!
"The White Russian"
Robert Powell has an excellent reading voice - clear and lacking in the idiosyncracies of other narrators who get between the writer and the listeners' own imagination. An exciting book.
Listened to it in 3 sittings.
"Favourite"
This is, possibly, the best book that I have ever downloaded. I found it difficult to 'put down' and it ticked all my boxes.
"Good historical romantic thriller"
This was well-researched, detective thriller with characters that come to believable life; it is helped further by being well read. It is an unusual take on the time and although the reader is aware that the October Revolution looms, the book avoids ruminating on it; romantic relationships are real rather than slushy; and I did not find myself guessing what came next. I was sorry when I came to the end.
"Brilliant!"
This is the first Tom Bradby I have read, and it certainly won't be the last. Part detective novel, part political thriller, part romance but none of it stereotyped or predictable. And has there ever been a better narrator than Robert Powell? Excellent.
"The White Russian"
A really enjoyable historic crime thriller set in an incredibly interesting time in Russia's history - 1917 - teetering on the Revolution and the downfall of the Tsar and his family. Sandro Ruzsky is a very believeable character and the story paints such a realistic picture that you can almost feel the bitter cold permeating through the worn soles of his boots. I will definitely look out for more by Tom Bradby.
"Excellent Audiobook"
As detailed in some other reviews Robert Powell does a fantastic job reading this book. His naration is flawless and worth listening to just for the reading. However, the story is also very well written and keeps going at a great pace. The historical angle is very good also and weaves the investigation into the Russian revolution which is an interesting angle. In all a very well written and produced book - highly recommended.
"Excellent."
Really good thriller, you can almost feel the tension in the air.And Robert Powell's narration is brilliant.
"Excellent read"
I really enjoyed this novel. It is an interesting and well written story with strong characters in it. Robert Powell does an excellent job of the narration
"Thrilling and Evocative"
This is a superior audiobook. Robert Powell's faultless reading
does full justice to the many layered narrative and diverse characters. I was effortlessly transported to the eve of the Russian Revolution, its tragedy and brutality played out in the story of Rusky, the melancholy aristocratic chief investigator of police. The intricate plot, fascinating characters and certain knowledge of the horrors that awaited Mother Russia in subsequent years made this a story that held my imagination in an icy grip and I felt bereft when it ended. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
