Publisher's Summary

The Buddha said many times that just as the great oceans have but one taste, so do all the true teachings of the dharma: the taste of freedom. Jack Kornfield's The Roots of Buddhist Psychology opens this eternal view of the mind for all listeners.

Among the world's great religions, Buddhism has developed a rich psychology based not on metaphysics, but on the human predicament. Through its strategies, you can discover for yourself how to find true freedom from worldly suffering. Buddhism views the mind as a maze of feelings, perceptions, and emotional states. Unhappiness is rooted in unskillful responses to our world: grasping when things are pleasant, aversion when they are unpleasant, and delusion/confusion when they are neutral. Through awareness training, Kornfield teaches, you can transform these responses into real skills that are the path to awakening and freedom.

Like no other teaching course, The Roots of Buddhist Psychology gives you immediate strategies for living in the present, including 12 profound lectures, each one a gem of intelligent wisdom, on Buddhism's central teachings about the psyche and sacred attention. Here is specific instruction, taught in the classic tradition and enlivened with many parables, worldly stories, and thoughts from artists, philosophers, and writers who have helped us see how to live true, useful lives. Join Jack Kornfield and discover for yourself that what you seek is already here.

"Buddha clarity for all to see"

This audiobook is a series of lectures by Jack Kornfeld which is clear and unfuddled in delivery, and very witty too, which adds to its listenability. I was pleased, too, that Jack's soft American accent works well here, and he avoids 'new age' sentimentality. In looking at how the mind perceives the world, we explore from a Buddhist perspective how our psychological chains can be unshackled through mindfulness and the shedding of illusion. Very informative and entertaining.

    "Very pleased with this purchase"

Jack Kornfield's soothing and insightful words helped me make sense of aspects of Buddhism that I have hitherto found difficult to grasp. He peppers his talks with humour, compassion and acceptance, making them entertaining as well as informative. Very happy with this purchase!

    "Really good listening"

I've really enjoyed this audiobook although it sounds like a series of talks rather than him reading a book out loud. He's got a great sense of humour and there's laughter coming from ?the audience?... As for content: he describes basic Buddhist principles very clearly and logically and uses wonderful illustrative stories and reads quotes from a wide range of sources. He?s a great teacher and story-teller and I wholeheartedly recommend this book whether you?re interested in Buddhism or psychology or neither... everyone loves a good story, right? Well I do and Jack is great to listen to...

    "Excellent"

I must adimit I find Jacks voice a bit irritating, but I have now got over that. I have listened to quite a few of his audio books and think they are great - This is one of the best.
