Publisher's Summary

Bleak Expectations is the remarkable adventures of young Philip Bin as he struggles to rescue himself and his sisters from the plotting of his guardian, the scheming, evil and badly-named Mr Gently Benevolent, and the blood-curdling Hardthrasher brothers.

A Victorian epic of awful schools inc the aptly named St Bastards, worse prisons, nuns at St Bitches, giant rabbits, and long lost super-hero aunts, in the style of Charles Dickens after far too much gin. If you liked Blackadder than this historical romp is very much up your street. This is the latest comedy from Mark Evans (writer) and Gareth Edwards (producer) of Mitchell and Webb and features a big name cast including , Anthony Head, Celia Imrie, Geoffrey Whitehead, Richard Johnson, Tom Allen and James Bachman.

    "Hilarious"

This is wonderful - very funny and very cleverly done. I recommend all three series. Our whole family loves it; from the twelve-year-old up. Anthony Head will always be Mr Gently Benevolent to us all.

    "Hilarious"

It's victorian, it's surreal and it's hilarious. The performances from everyone are brilliant but James Bachman and Anthony Head deserve special mention. I defy you not to be laughing from this show long after you've finished listening to it.

    "Very very funny"

Yes it is really very stupid in places, but it will have you snorting with laughter.

Anthony Head steals every scene with some delightful hamming, but you love him for it.

    "Bleak Expectations Series 2"

This Radio program always lifts my spirits on a bad day. Sometimes it's infantile humour, other times pythonesque, but it's always entertaining. Having suffered through reading Dickens at school, this brilliant parody makes it seem worthwhile - although you don't have to have read Dickens to find this funny. Anyway I would thoroughly recommend this series to everyone.

    "Absolutly Brilliant!"

I first listened to this on a bus journey in France, I was laughing for the entire journey earning me many strange looks but Bleak Expectations is so good that it is impossible to listen to it without laughing. The cast is superb, timing the jokes to perfection and making you believe the implausible and downright impossible. The jokes are brilliant and accessible by both young and old even though the links to Dickens require knowledge of his work to understand. Many thanks to my friend for introducing me to Bleak Expectations is truly amazing both clever and funny while making subtle comments on society. Now my friends and I can talk for hours, spouting apparent gibberish as we quote Bleak Expectations, laughing all the time, many thanks to my friend for introducing me to the program. Hurrumble for Bleak Expectations.
