Before Barack Obama became a politician, he was, among other things, a writer. Dreams from My Father is a masterpiece: a refreshing, revealing portrait of a young man asking the big questions about identity and belonging.
The son of a black African father and a white American mother, Obama recounts an emotional odyssey. He retraces the migration of his mother's family from Kansas to Hawaii, then to his childhood home in Indonesia. Finally he travels to Kenya, where he confronts the bitter truth of his father's life and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

"A remarkable story, beautifully told." (Observer)
"This may be the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician." (Joe Klein, Time magazine)
"Extraordinary . . . truly moving . . . Obama is a born narrator, with a mastery of colour, scene and personality." (Simon Jenkins, Sunday Times)
"Obama in the Car"
I listened through my GPS in the car and I loved the fact that Obama narrated. Accents and all. Great work!
"A superb listen"
Not a book I would have usually chosen, but I am so pleased I did. I loved the narration by Barack and found his story inspiring. It gives Barack a human side I had never known.
"DREAMS OF MY FATHER"
BARRACK OBAMA READS THIS STORY WITH STRENGTH AND TRUE BELIEF. ONCE STARTED I ONLY STOPPED THIS STORY WHEN I WAS TRULY TIRED AND READY FOR BED !!
"stories from the heart"
Obama is telling his family story from his heart and you are able to feel, how he felt when everything happened. His voice is wonderful, you can hear him all day. O
"Excellent insight"
Read by himself, this account of Obama'a life opened up issues which you don't realise when you see him in his official capacity e.g. the huge importance of racism in his life. It was a bit long winded in places but his trip to Kenya to find his Dad's birthplace and relatives was memorable.
"This Book Is My Story too"
President Barack Obama is as real as can be in this beautifully written and read autobiography. Every word found a place to rest and act within me. I am quite honoured to hear this man of many talents share his vulnerability, fears, struggles and joys. He is a human with a common touch. I was engaged throughout the book reading. His unique voice made the experience even more enjoyable. Must check for his other books.
"Warmed my soul"
I'm not one for writing reviews, or for reading (listening) to non-fiction, but since I had just voted for this man for the second time, I thought I'd have a listen. I'm so pleased I did. When Barack Obama ran for president, in 2008, I'd never heard of him. I'd been in the UK 8 years by then and didn't realise he was pricking up ears politically. When I heard him speak, he was impassioned, sincere, and he spoke of things that made sense to me. He spoke as a citizen of the world and it impressed me. This book tells me how he became that worldly man. Why he speaks to us with so many points of view and why I believe in him as a President. This audiobook, won a Grammy and I can certainly understand why. Enjoy it! The time will zoom by.
"More soul"
I was looking forward to listening to this life story, but was disappointed and didn’t get past chapter 4. It seemed to me Obama skimmed over his life and those he interacted with, maybe there was too much to be said about everyone. I was looking for a more in-depth story about his relationship with his family and not so much about the various people who influenced along the way. I wanted more from the heart, less about his Christian beliefs, and pastors who mean little to the listener. Well read but would love more soul searching.
