"Gripping!"
It was great to take another mindtrip into the tortuous brain of Jacko Vance as the team struggle to stop him on his rampage. Fast-paced, lots of twists and turns, everything that I would expect from a Tony Hill book by this author. True, no happy endings (yet), but I continue to hope! It had me listening at every opportunity!
"Bit of a curates egg"
My first listen to a Val McDermid book, I was looking forward to this book after reading so many good reviews and hearing good things about the authors work.
I have to say that I was left with somewhat mixed feelings after listening to the book. To me the plot seems a little weak, the villain whilst being incarcerated is able to organize a set of circumstances and set up the kind of survailance that would make MI5 envious with only the help of a man who comes accross in the book as being something of a gullable half wit. The plot is predictable with only the twist at the climax coming as a surprise.
The dialogue is a little stodgy and the use of bad language is sprinkled so liberally and out of context that i believe it does not have the impact that the author was looking for. The scenes of extreme violence however are in my opinion the greatest strength in this authors armoury, graphic and extremely well described. The book is fast paced and the complex interaction between the primary characters is very good.
The narration of Saul Reichlin did not really suit the book, having enjoyed his reading of the Millenium Trilogy I did not feel he did the characters any real justice.
Not a bad novel, but from much of the hype I expected a little more.
"Gripping Thriller"
Val McDermid does not let her fans down in the latest Carol Jordan and Tony Hill thriller. It is well written, gripping and I couldn't stop listening. The narrator does a good job and has a great voice for the relentlessly grim nature of this book. Not sure if his character voices are completely convincing but I did get used to that. I do have a few issues that have stopped me giving this 5 stars- found the two different storylines slightly disjointed and wasn't happy with the development of Carol and Tony's relationship. Despite this, a highly recommended listen
"Mesmerising"
As usual, Val McDermid piles on the agony and manages to keep you guessing. The sudden ending stopped me in my tracks. It is a very sombre book overall, and leaves one hoping for a little more compassion for poor old Tony next time around! I have to say that I think the narrator, although good at the narrative parts, fell down when it came to the voices of the characters. Carol in particular sounded like a gruff, asthmatic middle aged man.
"Fantastic"
The best yet....please churn another Tony Hill book soon, Val. I am hooked! Saul Reichlin is the best narrator...better than Vari Sylvester (sorry Vari)
"excellent"
I have read all of Val McDermids books - they are all brilliant but this one is her best yet - I was gripped from start to finish - well recommend this one - my only regret was when I finished it.
"The bitter end for Tony and Carol?"
This late McDermid is one of the best in the Tony Hill — Carol Jordan series. Most of the police staff is well known from books and TV but some parts of the puzzle in the strange relation between the protagonists get their explication here. The question now is if Carols decision to break with Tony is going to be fulfilled or how their relationship might become restored. A cliff hanger if there ever was one for the fans of psychological mysteries.

"Excellent listen"
A couldn't stop listening title! I was listening to it constantly to the annoyance of my children! It was gripping, well written and narrated. I have never listened to or read any others in this series although I had watched the TV series and only bought it because it was on offer. It turned out to be a much better choice than my chosen title
"Great plot"
I really enjoyed this. It is well narrated and kept me guessing to the end.
"Hill and Jordan - another chapter"
This is the first Val McDermid story I have listened to as an audiobook. Great narration and the freshness of a story which has not been presented on television has meant that this has been a compelling listen. Great description of the players and charactistically twisted plot twists have kept me enthralled from the very start. I will certainly look for more recordings from both this author and narrator. I highly recommend this to fans of Tony Hill.
