Kyle McAvoy is one of the outstanding legal students of his generation with a glittering future ahead of him. But he has a secret that threatens to destroy his fledgling career and, possibly, his entire life.
One night that secret catches up with him in the form of some bad men in a dark alley - and they have a video of the incident that haunts him. Kyle no longer owns his own future - he must do as they tell him. What price do they demand for Kyle's secret?
Strangely, it is for Kyle to do exactly what any ambitious young lawyer would want to do: take a job in New York as an associate at the largest law firm in the world, a job that is incredibly well paid and could lead to partnership and a fortune.
Only Kyle won't be working for the company, but against it. Will his intellect, cunning and bravery be enough to extricate him from an impossible dilemma?

"Is this the worst Grisham yet?"
The book takes an age to get going and then plods along at a very slow pace. One gets the impression that Grisham doesn't really know where to take the plot, which amounts to very little in the first place as it is. It certainly could do with a lot of editing.
There are a number of loose ends left, too, at the conclusion when the book tails off disappointingly.
While he remains a very good teller of a story, I get the impression from this book that Grisham has really run out of steam.
It's very well read, anyway!
"Thumbs down for this one"
Sadly this one for me was too much about the law and not enough story. I need a book I can drop and pick back up. With this I was rewinding continuously to make sense of it. Boo hoo!
"Ugh"
I kept waiting for the good bit. I have now finished it and am still waiting..... What happened? The narration was very 'stilted' and the story just wasn't much of a story. Very disappointing.
"Wasted hours, you don't get them back you know."
This book completely defines the phrase anti climax. pointless.
"Not the usual standard"
I was very disappointed with this story. Grisham builds a good plot with the main character finding himself in a seemingly inescapable situation (as usual) but then he seems to have no idea how to finish the story. The outcome is a huge anti-climax leaving loads of unanswered questions. This book lacks all the tension, suspense and action of other Grisham titles and is far off the standard I've grown to expect. I also agree with the other reviewers, the reader is poor especially when voicing the characters.
"Not the best reading"
This is not one of Grisham's best books, and I did not think the reader was very good. He was very slow and as the book is a bit slow anyway, I found it a bit of a snooze. There are better Grisham books with better readers out there.
