Publisher's Summary

In a room above a bizarre German museum, and far from the prying eyes of strangers, lives the Old Man. Caretaker of the museum by day, by night he enjoys the sound of silence, broken by the occasional crunch of a spider between his blackened teeth. Little Hands Clapping brings together the Old Man with the respectable Doctor Ernst Frohlicher, his greedy dog Hans, and a cast of grotesque and hilarious townsfolk, all of whose lives are thrown together as the town uncovers a crime so outrageous that it will shock the world.

From its sinister opening to its explosive denouement, Little Hands Clapping blends lavishly entertaining storytelling with Rhodes's macabre imagination, entrancing originality, and magical touch.

What the Critics Say

"Oh, how we love Dan Rhodes. Reliably odd but fabulous." (Guardian)

"Dan Rhodes is totally sick and brilliant in all the right ways. He sucks you into his world and before you know it, you're willingly trapped. So very smart. I loved it." (Douglas Coupland)

"Dan Rhodes has deservedly made a name for himself as an assured comic stylist. Little Hands Clapping is an amusing fable about thwarted altruism and good intentions gone askew. It should please cynical idealists and idealistic cynics alike." (Financial Times)

"Suicide museum horror meets Gabriel Garcia Marquez romance, welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Dan Rhodes." (John O'Connell, Waterstone's Books Quarterly)

    "Amazing!"

Despite the somewhat "dodgy" subject matter, this had me laughing out loud frequently! At times the storyline seems to drift away, in fact I was wondering if it was a collection of short stories at one point, but it all comes together wonderfully. Beautifully narrated in a droll style, with amusing accents, and a tidy ending, this book has it all and I shall be looking for more by this author. Definitely a 5* listen :)

    "Curious, dark, creepy and delightful."

What a wonderful book; heart-warming and creepy in equal measure. Kris Dyer's narration lends the perfect tone to this book, giving it a quietly sinister and pensive air throughout. The storytelling kept me listening, both in rapt delight and ghoulish curiosity.

Definitely looking forward to more from this author.

    "Strong and moving"

I started listening, and then every evening I had to listen to some more. The narration was really entertaining, the accents vivid and I was sad when the end of the story came, and what a story, I wish all of Dan Rhodes books were on audible, I would buy them in a heartbeat.

    "Disturbing, uplifting and captivating"

It took me a little while to get into the story as there are several disparate strings that only come together in the end but I was very glad that I persisted. The story is darkly comic, full of surprises, twists and turns and draws you in through richly descriptive language and a brilliant narrator. At times it almost made me wretch, frequently I'd laugh out loud and at one point I actually cried - so quite an emotional rollercoaster! This is definitely not a story for the faint hearted and it will probably stay with you for a long time after you've finished reading it.

    "Just awful"

I have listened to many books via Audible, some, thanfully few, poor, some average but most excellent, this is the first book that I have given up on after a few hours of painful persistence.
