Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks

This is one of the best books i've had from this site since i joined it. Not so much a whodunnit or even why, you know this (pretty much) from the beginning, but how. Well read and wonderfully written i put my life on hold for two days so i could listen to it to the end and then promptly listened again from the beginning. Funny, enlightening and sometimes quite horrifying i will be buying more of Mr. Brookmyres books as soon as possible.

I really enjoyed this ghost story come thriller come detective story. Lots of inexplicable events, loads upon loads of twists that were so obvious once explained but nearly impossible to foresee, a gripping tale and with a sense of humour. Great narration - even though lots of passages were written in the first person and read by one of the two narrators I didn't get the characters confused. Thoroughly recommended.

A good story - I initially found the use of two narrators a little off putting as they had different accents for the same characters. However, once over this short fall I really got in to the plot (not too complex but entertaining enough to keep me listening) The descriptions and insight in to the lead characters brought them to life and I have no hesitation in recommending this book especially, if like me, to those who have a skeptical appreciation of the afterlife and all that it does or doesn't hold. This is fiction I know but the author really likes to make you feel like part of the story. A bit of a far fetched ending but overall enjoyable nevertheless....

In a world of increasing 'new age' philosophising it is a joy to hear a book like this. A twist at the start, no less, keeps one hooked from the get go. It's difficult to go into any of the many plot intricacies, without revealing major 'spoilers'. Suffice to say, in a brilliant, funny, satirical and sometimes wonderfully strange novel, Christopher Brookmyre has produced a 'Woo woo!' wrecking masterpiece.

After hearing or reading this splendid novel, only the most stubborn will cling to their outdated superstitious views. Get it, and enjoy.

This is a splendid story. However, I think I was spoilt for narration of Christopher Brookmyre's novels when I downloaded Quite Ugly One Morning, read by David Tennant in a variety of splendid Scottish accents. The trouble with "Attack", for me, is that the female narration is too, too accurately a depiction of a white middle-class WASP, firmly south of the border and altogether too full of herself. Jilly Bond does a superb job - and her voice grates horribly on me. I'll go back to enjoying this book in paperback, where I can't hear her character so clearly!

This was the first Christopher Brookmyre book I ever read and I really enjoyed it. However if I'd bought this as an audio version first, I would never have read anything else of his. Joe Dunlop has a pleasant voice and reads well, but SOOOO slowly! It doesn't help that the book is written in the first person from the viewpoint of 3 people, Jilly Bond reads one part well, but the other 2 parts are male and Mr Dunlop makes no distinction between their voices so when he flicks from one to another it takes a few minutes to realise which person he is reading.

I only completed the audiobook because I knew it had a good ending, but it took a long while to get there whereas I found the book to be totally gripping.

I had to work hard to determine what it was that left me wanting with this book and I think it comes down to pace and laughs. It was actually quite tough for me to give him a three out of five. Mr B usually has me caught up in his story and regularly embarrassing myself on the train by laugh out loud moments. As much as I agree with his politics and sentiments there was a bit too much preaching and not enough laughs for twists. I don't want to put anybody off this author though. This was a good listen, I don't regret the purchase but is you've not read his other books, start elsewhere.

And if you're reading this my Brookmyre - you can do better than this. Parlabane would be using stronger language mind.

I really enjoyed this book.
Very unusual and out of the ordinary - the author has an extremely dark sense of humour!
Don't be put off - as I nearly was - by the subject matter - it's an entertaining and engaging read - treat yourself to something a bit different.

I have listened to audio books for many years and one word comes to mind with this one. Overblown. It is about eight hours longer than it need be, can be very confusing and the use of several speakers is hard work.

That said the actual story and end twist is very good, but it takes far to long to get there, my patience was sorely tried. Also for some reason the main character in the first chapter uses profanities not found in the rest of the book.

If it is available get the abridged version, this is far to long and in my opinion wonders into meaningless minutiae all to easily. Good, but very hard work.
