"The Greatest"
In a nutshell..The Greatest writer, his Greatest book, read by the Greatest Narrator.
The wealth of characters are astonishing, the strange Miss Dartle, the evil Mr Murdstone, the despicable and slimy Uriah Heep and the hilarious Mr Micawber, are but a few of the dozens of vivid characters in Dickens masterpiece.
They are all brought to life by the narration of the magnificent Martin Jarvis, whose vocal characterisations are nothing short of astonishing.
A must buy for any audio-book fan
"The Joy of Audible"
The joy of Audible is that you can hear a book read in it's entirety.
The joy of Dickens is that he gives us so many great and memorable characters, Uriah Heep, Mr Macawber, Barkiss, Peggety, Betsie Trotwood and many more in this wonderful book.
The joy of Martin Jarvis is that he brings every Dickens character to life in wonderful clarity.
In this reading of David Copperfield you get a massive 35 hours of every scene of this incomparable and gripping story.
I had to turn off the story from time to time but was always eager to find out what would happen as the drama twists and turns in every chapter.
Thank you Audible for the complete story.
"Excellent reading"
Martin Jarvis is a natural for Dickens. His voice dramatizes the characters superbly and I cannot imagine anyone doing David Copperfield's long list of glittering characters more justice than this particular reader.
My favourite is Aunt Betsey and her cry of 'Donkeys!' which brought tears of laughter to my eyes. Jarvis also makes the unctuous Uriah Heep seem even more sinister and fishy, while managing a different breathy voice for each of the female characters. Astonishingly good. I loved this reading and recommend it thoroughly.
"Excellent"
This is a superb audiobook full of humour as well as sadness. It is peopled with wonderful and memorable characters and Martin Jarvis marvellous reading brings them alive.
I was forced to read this book at school when I was obviously far too young and did not 'get' the humour. What a mistake! Only now, after 40 years, was I tempted to try it again. I am now off to get other Dickens audio books!
I highly recommend this book to you . . . it is just made to be read aloud and I can think of no better person than Martin Jarvis to do so.
"David Copperfield"
Dickens excellent story telling made even more fascinating with the naration by Martin Jarvis, who must undoubtably be the best there is.
"a one-man full-cast performance"
This is a wonderful reading of a great novel. It is really like having a full-cast performance; Martin Jarvis manages to provide every character with a distinctive voice. Uriah Heep (whom he played on a television version) is perhaps the most striking - disturbingly creepy. But full marks also to his splendidly booming Micawber and his whining Mrs Gummidge. Perhaps the best thing is how he manages to turn even the most minor of characters - like the asthmatic Mr Omer, for instance - into memorable figures. It's a novel I've always been fond of and this performance has greatly enriched it for me.
"Masterly A world of characters bursting to life"
A real treat - and all through! The pace so well handled, keeping the story moving, but highighting deftly joys and sorrows and the contrasting realities of the times. Each character well defined in the reading, individual and knowable. I laughed out loud so often, but also felt the pain. Highly recommended.
"Did it, at last!"
I've read a lot of books, and listened to quite a few, but this was the first Dickens one I have tackled. It was..........enjoyable! Not at all "hard" and certainly not a chore. The narration was pretty phenomenal. The majority of characters were instantly recognisable from their voice alone. To start with, I found his delivery a little overly jocular and his voice reminded me of the guy who reads the Just William stories, but this feeling wore off as the story became less bleak and more comic. Have to admit that the way Dickens wrote is a bit long winded, and dramatic for my modern ears and the characters are strongly caricatured. It is a fine book though, as everyone knows, especially those who have not read it!!
"Wow"
OMG - I adored this book - I always thought old writers couldn't engage me how wrong I was.
The character depth and story detail keep you fully engaged even when nothing is going on.
Absolutely SUPERB!!!!!
"Brilliant reading of a great novel"
I can't imagine a better reading of this great novel than Martin Jarvis's. He brings each of the large cast of characters vividly to life, and paces the book perfectly so that the forward momentum is constantly maintained (crucial in such a large book). A perfect introduction to Dickens on audiobook for anyone who hasn't tried him.
