Publisher's Summary

Winner of the British Book Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award, 2007.

Two Supreme Court Justices are dead. Their murders are connected only in one mind and in one legal brief conceived by that mind. Brilliant, beautiful, and ambitious, New Orleans legal student Darby Shaw little realises that her speculative brief will penetrate to the highest levels of power in Washington and cause shockwaves there. Shockwaves that will send hired killers chasing after her and will propel her across the country to meet the one man who is as near the truth as she is.

    "Complex but utimately satifying"

This is vintage John Grisham: a complex web of deceit in high places aided by some unethical lawyers against whom the few good men (and in this book a woman as well) fight and ultimately succeed in achieving justice. Lorelei King is an admirable narrator, which helps as there are so many characters. I found if I didn't concentrate fully on the story I got muddled as to who was whom among the FBI, CIA, White House employees, newspaper men, lawyers, businessmen and criminals! They're all there in this intricate thriller that keep you listening.

    "Interesting Plot with Quirks"

I've listened to several John Grisham novels and I always have difficulty getting into the story. As usual it was worth the effort.

    "The Pelican Brief"

The story was a bit unlikely but still a good read and quite well narrated. I hadn't seen the film and it kept my interest throughout
