I use my Audible on my morning commute. This was so good I couldn't wait that long and had to listen on the way home as well! Read with passion it was brilliant from start to finish.
I wanted car journeys to go on longer and couldn't wait to leave for work as I loved this so much...I was so excited to find out what happened, it was gripping all the way to the end.
I've never written a review before but felt compelled to with this book. It kept me enthralled throughout and I drove my family mad with the 'oh no!' and 'I can't believe it' when listening. It's a real thriller - I loved it!
bought this on an impulse purely as a journey filler for a long haul flight, now I'm back home I have added the whole series to my wish list. Good plot with so many twists and turns I listen to part one in one go, so engaged with the characters. Found the narrator better suited to some chapters more than others, but just a slight niggle
"Great escapist fun!"
If this had been a book it would have been a real page turner. I wanted my journeys to last and last so I could continue listening.
Exciting fast moving with a fascinating twist that I really didn't expect!
This is by far the best audio book I have downloaded since joining Audible. Its very well narrated and within the first half hour or so, you are already introduced to a range of major characters who are memorable, interesting and hold your imagination. I'm terrible for reading the cover of a book or seeing the first 5 minutes of a film and working out exactly how its going to pan out. You can't do it with this book. There are several twists, things happen that you just don't expect, minor characters who appear that change your train of thought etc. Its characters are believable and its not really that far fetched so as a worst case scenario for the victim, it is something that could happen - fundamentally a prank gone wrong. I would highly recommend this book. I've put the rest of the series in my wishlist. This review is in respect of the unabridged version.
"Inventive story but ...."
This is a very inventive story but narrated by an incredibly irritating reader who gets so many stress and intonation patterns wrong and mispronounces so many words that it almost spoils the whole experience. I'm not surer how the editor could have let some of the more obvious mistakes go uncorrected. I am still reading because I want to find out what happens in the end but the narrator is driving me increasingly crazy!
This was a good yarn. A fiendishly clever plot that, at times, resurrected my claustrophobic feelings. But! Why oh why do some of these, very good, authors, spoil a wonderful story by going on to the point where you feel they are trying to challenge Dickens for the title. I know, Peter James would point out, with some justification, that the thing has to run its course, that takes words, and if you only want a short story, why bother with a full length novel. But that isn't really the point, is it? Some thing are better left to the imagination, for the reader to ponder over.
A wonderful yarn, just too long.
"Made me scream"
Sorry to be a killjoy but am currently half way through this audiobook and not sure if I can take anymore!! The characters are so unbelievable and their reactions have driven me to frustrated screaming whilst driving. I think what pains me the most is the dialogue between the Davey character and Michael. This is so wrong that I'm starting to get angry right now just thinking about it!!!!
This is my first Peter James book and will be my last....
I am, to be perfectly honest, half way through this. I have to admit, it is a fiendishly cunning plot. One I have never heard of before, or would have thought of myself. Characterisation is good; it is all very very plausible, and very frightening. I do suffer from claustrophobia, and it brings me out in a cold sweat. The big problem with this, is the same as with so many other books of the type. The author uses 2500 words where 500 would have done. wonderful story, clever plot, very very gripping. But just over long. I like long books, but there is just too much minutiae here. Too much simply unnecessary detail; detail that has nothing whatever to do with the plot or the characters. You find yourself willing the thing on; another beef pie and coffee? Really? But enjoyable for all that.
