You learnt your own language naturally and enjoyably: now you can learn German in the same way.
This is the first two hours of the eight-hour German Foundation Course. In this original, ground-breaking studio recording, join Michel Thomas himself, linguist, psychologist, and language teacher to the stars, and two students in a live lesson and within the first hour you will be able to construct simple phrases. "The best way to learn a new language"
For those who have attempted to learn a new language and failed this is a completely different way of teaching. The onus here (as Michel says in the course) is in the teaching method of the language and not on the learner to learn and memorise the language. As a result the method is much more relaxed and so I feel the language is absorbed better - Michel is very adamant that you must not try to memorise. The course prompts you to (along with the other 2 students used to create a classroom environment) to think about the language and try to guess what a word or expression would be - instead of telling you first how to say it (Michel is also good at giving you just enough pointers to work it out while still giving you the feeling of working it out by yourself - great for confidence). There is also a brief explanation at the start of how the large part of English is based on German and how consanants "shifted" over time. This gives you a large vocabulary you thought you never had. The biggest bonus to this course I feel is that it is taught by Michel himself - having tried some of the "Michel Thomas method" courses I feel that Michel is a much better teacher than the others used in the more recent courses and has a much more engaging tone. However, I would still recommend all of the courses as the method really does work.
"Like being in a small class!"
This was a great way to refresh the basics of conversation after nearly 30 years. I only ever did one year of German at school but it was amazing how it flooded back. Michel Thomas has you working out quite long sentences very quickly and you feel like you are part of a small group. I rate this very highly and would love to have a follow on course to do.
"Not very helpful"
I've recently been trying to learn some German to prepre for a summer holiday so downloaded this hoping to pick some up. My major problem with this guide is the voice of the teacher. I appreciate he may be an expert in language but I found his voice rather unpleasant to listen to. I really couldn't get past this hurdle and struggled through the tutorial. There are far better introductory courses out there.
"So easy"
This appears to be a straight forward, no nonsense, unique approach to learning a new language. It's so intuitive and I honestly felt confident in a very short space of time to use it in conversation. The method asks you not to memorise anything which at first feels strange but by relaxing and going with it, the way you learn sets up a longer term structure so as to understand the grammar and conversation not just a list of words. Excellent in my opinion and learning this quickly really motivates you to delve deeper or indeed try another new language taught by this method.
