It is a late night on a notorious high-rise estate in Hackney, and a white van is being driven erratically. The driver is pulled over by the police and questioned.
A woman is found on the street after a long evening's drinking. She never makes it home.
A suspect...an arrest...a confession.... Is it a case done and dusted?
Five years earlier, a 13-year-old girl disappeared in broad daylight on a busy London street. DCS James Langton headed the investigation; the case was never closed. It has haunted him ever since. And now comes another confession to this murder and to one more, besides.
Is it too good to be true? DCI Anna Travis, pulled into the fray, isn't so sure that they have their man. Then the suspect changes his story....

"Excellent read!"
I have thouroughly enjoyed listening to this book from the pen of Ms La Plante. Kim Hicks' narration was very good for the most part and bought many of the characters to life once you got past some of her rather ropey accents, the cockney (not great) and the faux 'Jamaican' accent (haven't laughed so much it was so bad). I found it to be an excellent installment in the lives of Anna Travis, Langton, Lewis, Barolli and the rest of the team. Looking forward to the next one.
"Backlash"
A very good book to listens to couldn't turn it off towards the end Lynda la Plante has proven again to be a brilliant writer
"Classic La Plante"
Classic La Plante and a gripping, easy listen. The Anna Travis series works brilliantly on audio - the writing is pretty spare but the characterisation and police procedural detail is excellent. The last Anna Travis I listened to was abridged and I really felt that too much detail was missing. This is crime perfection.
