When he was the NYPD's top homicide investigator, Dave Gurney was never comfortable with the label the press gave him: super detective. He was simply a man who, when faced with a puzzle, wanted to know.
He was called to the investigative hunt by the presumptuous arrogance of murderers - by their smug belief that they could kill without leaving a trace. There was always a trace, Gurney believed. Except what if one day there wasn't?
With Shut Your Eyes Tight, John Verdon delivers on the promise of his internationally best-selling debut, Think of a Number, creating a portrait of evil let loose across generations that is as rife with moments of touching humanity as it is with spellbinding images of perversity.

"disturbing"
A disturbing crime but a great story, (although because of the narrator I kept expecting Jack Reacher to show up)
"A tight twisted plot"
This is my first John Verdon book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main character Dave Gurney is a frustrated retired detective who needs to use his grey cells, but is torn between a gory case and his wife who wants him to stay at home and enjoy retirement. What starts as as one murder spirals into a sick twisted plot which brings danger to everyone involved. The book was well narrated by Jeff Harding with his gravelly voice and characterisation. and I would definitely recommend
"Excellent thriller"
An intriguing and well thought out book. I never wanted it to finish , the reader is superb. I shall be signing up for anything else this guy writes.
"My eyes were open"
Good story and I liked listening to the reader. The end was not a surprise, but getting there was a suspense. I enjoyed it and I am looking forward to my next book by the author.
"A really enthralling detective story"
A well written and very enjoyable detective story. It was also well-read (American accent was fine).
I haven't read any other books by this author but this story stands well on its own. i would certainly reccomend it.
"They said it was a page turner..."
I stuck with it until the end, but I can't say I enjoyed it all that much. The narrator really got on my nerves most of the time. The only character that I enjoyed was jack. All his female voices were the same. A lot of the time I was screaming in my head for him to just get on with it. Never mind the inane waffle, stick with the story. Not a page turner for me.
"Car reader"
Very good book plot keept evolving and was unexpected. This writer was new to me and I was happily surprised.
"Great story teller"
Enjoyed this book, story not bad but the narrator is the best. he can do so many voices that I think I am listening to a play.
