Publisher's Summary

Harry Hole, drunkard, loner and brilliant detective is reassigned to surveillance after a high profile mistake. He's bored by his new job until a report of a rare and unusual gun being fired sparks his interest because of its possible links to Neo Nazi activity. Then a former soldier is found with his throat cut. Next Harry's former partner is murdered. Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night her head was smashed in? The investigation leads Harry to suspect that the crimes have their roots in the battlefields of Eastern Front during WWII. In a quest that takes him to South Africa and Vienna, Harry finds himself perpetually one step behind the killer. He will be both winner and loser by the novel's nail-biting conclusion.

The Redbreast. He's your judge, jury and executioner...And he must be stopped.

    "Slow burner, but thrilling finish"

First audiobook I have heard from Jo Nesbo, and it won't be my last. Persevere with the initial stories of the Eastern front, it does all come together at a thrilling end. I look forward to hearing more about Inspector Harry Hole. I enjoyed the story and the narration. Not quite a Stig Larson story, but does merit comparison.

"A well read and interesting audiobook"

This is a well read and interesting audio book. The chapters are short, which keeps the action moving and the intrigue at just the right level. The book jumps backwards and forwards between the present and WW II and this can be a bit confusing at the start but it all makes perfect sense in the end.

I will be downloading the other books in the Harry Hole series.

I did not notice the poor editing which other reviewers have referred to. I guess it must be fixed.

    "Good story, terrible editing"

A good story (4 stars) and well read, but hard to listen to because of the editing errors mentioned by previous reviewers - far too many instances of the narrator repeating a sentence to tidy up a mistake and the original mistake not being edited out.

I'll get more of these, but really hope the quality improves on the other books in the series.

    "Thriller by Name...."

The first Jo Nesbo book I have listened to, enjoyed it so much! I listen on headphones while I work at patchwork projects at home. Another brilliant way to multitask! I love Nesbos' writing style, so many twists and turns in the gritty story lines and 'Harry' is such a likeable rogue. Have now added more Harry Hole titles to my listening library and have become totally addicted.

    "A Jo Nesbø must have"

I have always been a huge fan of the books of Jo Nesbø and have read most of them in both Norwegian and English, and I must say this is one of the best! To follow Harry Hole on his different cases, his ups and downs, the characters surrounding him and everything makes you smile, while at the same time it is one the most thrilling books on the market. In my opinion Jo Nesbø is the best author in the world, and Harry Hole one of the best characters, and put together they are simply a must have for everyone who like crime novels, loved it!!!!!!

    "Super read"

After finishing The Snowman I was quite taken with the Harry Hole character, so I decided to go back and start from the beginning. Since I don't speak Norwegian this book was as far back as I could go; third in the series but the first translated to English. I really enjoyed this one too and I think I'll stick with Harry for a while and catch up on his other adventures. This is a pretty standard serial killer, psychological thriller, police procedural novel - but it has a nice split timeline alternating between WWII and the present day, the writing is tight and clever, the characters interesting and there are enough twists to keep you guessing. Nice read!

    "Excellent book, really well read"

Another great Jo Nesbo book with some good twists and loads of nice background on Harry et al if, like me, you're not reading the books in order. As with the previous books they are brilliantly read by Sean Barrett who has a great voice and good characterisations.

One small note - my download had several instances where the reader started a sentence, made a mistake and then restarted the sentence. Not many but certainly more than I've noticed in any other books - perhaps they're rushing them out to cash in on the authors popularity?

"I shall get more of these"

The book is super. Lovers of Henning Mankell will love it and sill wish to obtadin more Jo Nesbo.
The recoding is either poorly (not?) edited or else just not up to Sean Barrett's usual high standard; he re-starts at least six sentences in the first half of part one.

    "Harry Hole and The Redbreast"

This is the second Harry Hole novel that I have listened to and was very enjoyable. It is good to listen to in audible format as some of the names would be difficult in Norwegian. The book appears a lot clearer because of this. I enjoyed the historical aspect of this novel and the ways it was interwoven with the modern day. I found it difficult to keep up with some of the characters because of confusion over names but I often find that with Scandinavian writers. I enjoyed the novel very much and will read more of Harry Hole. Its onto The Nemesis the second in the Oslo series

    "Exciting and very good experience"

This story, as well as other Jo Nesbo`s books about Harry Hole, will become your obsession. Firstly the figure of the detective is so much realistic. He will become very close to you. I do not like smokers but Harry Hole is an exception, I am very critical to alcoholics but his dedication to Jim Beam is ok for me. It is the way how Jo Nesbo is able to provide the story and OF COURSE the incredibly good interpretation of Sean Barrett. Voice in my head that makes me listening and listening.
