Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Costa Book of the Year, 2001.

The award-winning His Dark Materials trilogy is a breathtaking epic adventure spanning a multitude of worlds. In The Amber Spyglass, the third and final instalment, read by the author and a full cast, the war between good and evil reaches a shattering conclusion.

Lyra and Will are helped by friends old and new as they continue their perilous journey. The great armoured bear Iorek Byrnison reappears, as does Dr Mary Malone, creator of the amber spyglass. Then there are the tiny, dragonfly-riding Gallivespians, and the wheel-borne Mulefa with their ability to see the mysterious substance Dust.

As childhood slips away from them, Lyra and Will face new dangers - including the daemon-destroying Spectres and a journey into the world of the dead. The pair must play their part in the climax of a war for the future of all worlds.

"Mr Pullman Please Write Book 4!"

The final part in the Dark Materials Trilogy and what a finale!

I thought the start of this story was a bit slower than the first two but as the story unfolded all the action and adventure was there and just as good as the previous books.

I didn't want this final instalment to end, yet i couldn't stop listening to it. My emotions were given a battering and i felt shattered when it finished, it was as if i had been there with Lyra and company all along.

I can't recommend this book highly enough but be prepared to become totally immersed in Lyra's world and to feel like a wreck when your adventure ends, in fact you won't want it to end.

Fantastic!!! But please can we have one more book 8-)

    "brilliant!"

Stunningly well read, totally absorbing - this is a brilliant finale.
I agree with the other reviewer in that it is a bit slow to get going, but it does, and then I spent half the time guessing (wrongly) what was going to happen, and the other half engrossed.
I read too fast, and know I would never have gained the understanding and insight I did through listening if I'd just read it. I'd have galloped through it to find out what happens and missed so much.
I recommend this whole heartedly - after 30-plus hours of listening to the whole trilogy I am strugglling to chose my next listen. I want more!

    "Profound, beautifully voiced and magical"

I loved the His Dark Materials series when I read them (and re-read them) in print format, but was a little wary of listening to them. When I needed something I could cope with whilst ill, however, I figured it was a good option.

After I'd downloaded it and started to listen, I was invaded by my 2-year-old, and we both ended up curled up, listening intently, for a good hour before he trundled off to his grandparents. It's so very rare to find a narrator who really reads it as intended, and having Philip Pullman himself reading (and he really is an excellent reader) was a huge treat. Better than that, the cast is an exceptional collection of vocal talents who made it easy to picture the characters.

It was so much less disappointing than trying to watch The Golden Compass...

I'd recommend it to anyone without any reserve at all. Fantastic, gripping story and a beautifully made audiobook.

    "Final part"

The Amber Spyglass is a simply amazing book. Though written as a children's book, it manages to tell the story while keeping complex and without talking down to the reader.

In this part of the Trilogy the story begins to come together. The remaining characters are fleshed out without sacrificing the story.

The narration is beautiful, both cast and pacing are perfect.

    "Pleasure to listen to"

This is a good quality audio book which is easy to listen to. As it is unabridged, the whole book is there and it helped pass a very long car journey. It is the last one in the triliogy and ties up all the loose ends. Rcommend the whole series.

    "Welcome to a new world."

As a story it's very good at drawing you in, as other reviewers have said. The character dynamic and plot lines swirl and twirl in all sorts of directions, some with more surprise than others.

Even with all the controversy following this book, it's all submissive to the story and the fantastical world Pullman manages to weave together. It's a delight to listen to and whether you agree with what Philip Pullman says about faith and the world, you can't ignore the mastery of his imagination.

As an audiobook, this final episode in the trilogy is as high quality as all the others, with strong performances by all actors and very well read by Pullman. It took me a while to get into it with the previous version, by I was thoroughly enjoying his style by the end of it.

    "Liked the series, but..."

I enjoyed the first book very much. And also the second one. But the finish of this last one did greatly disappoint me. I did not expect this and it spoiled all the pleasure I had from the first books. I dont think I will listen again, it is just too much. Some people may like such endings, well, I dont. It destroys all my idea of how things should be.
However I have to admit that the narration was very well done (excellent!), it was impressive and breathtaking through all the books and it made this series quite unique. I can reccomend everybody to listen, never mind my displeased personal opinion of the final plot.

    "Excellent"

Didn't know I was getting the version with a full cast and took a bit of getting used to having had the Philip Pullman solo version of Northern Lights buts still excellent! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

    "Excellent audiobook!"

I really enjoyed reading the books orginally but couldn;t find my copy of this one so downloaded the audiobook. I don't usually like full cast recordings but this one is excellent. The voices are believalbe and distinct enough that it adds to the story. I really liked that the narrator is Phillip Pullman, it helps to keep the feel and atmosphere of the book. The story is fantastic and compelling and it ends the trilogy well, I was impressed with the ending although it made me cry! The audio adds to the story and is a brilliant way to enjoy this book.

I would recommend this audiobook to any fans of Phillip Pullman.
