Publisher's Summary

Philippa Perry's handbook consoles, nourishes and gently leads us on the path to sanity and emotional balance. There is no simple set of instructions that can guarantee sanity, but if you want to overcome emotional difficulties and become happier, psychotherapist Philippa Perry argues that there are four cornerstones to sanity you can influence to bring about change. By developing your self-observation skills, examining how you relate to others, breaking out of your comfort zone and exploring new ways of defining yourself, she suggests ways of finding emotional equilibrium.

Through case studies, practical exercises and stories of individual experience, this insightful and inspirational book reaches out to anyone in need of a little emotional support from time to time.

    "Poor narration and poor content"

The first thing I noticed was the lack of connection the narrator had with the material. The narrator's voice kept going up at the end, when it was not appropriate. The narrator seemed to lack understanding of the subject matter and the content of the audio book, which didn't help.

I also noticed the use of jargon at many points in the book that added nothing to the listener's understanding, nor was the jargon really explained. The book included discussion about constructing a geneogram, which is typically used by therapists to gain an understanding of the client's family and background. As a therapist and psychologist, I am concerned that the author suggests people could do this for themselves, whether they understand what they are doing or not. The author does not advise of the potential implications, nor fully how to undertake such a task. There are many other things I could say, so perhaps the most useful is that, in my view, there is little to be gained from spending your time on this book.

    "Interesting and Accessible"

Lots of information and background on how the brain works and what influences our behaviours, decision making and how we relate to other people. Not a self help book that promises to turn your life around, but more food for thought and some recommendations how to be mindful of oneself and others and deal with day to day life. The School of Life! Very much recommended.
