Publisher's Summary

The Triffids are a monstrous species of stinging plant; they walk, they talk, they dominate the world. The narrator of this novel wakes up in hospital to find that, by missing the end of the world as he knew it, he has survived to witness a new one. But the new world that awaits him is fantastic, horrific - and entirely plausible.

    Story
    "Excellent book"

I recommend this book very highly. As someone who watched the BBC series back in 1981 when I was 10, the audiobook brought back all the scenes with my minds eye, seeing John Duttine who portrayed the protagonist so well, doing battle with the new order.

The book, by Wyndham's own admission, is strongly influenced by War of the Worlds, and it is evident in the style of description of the English countryside and the various travels that the main characters undertake in finding a place in the new world, pursued by Triffids.

The narrator does a great job and the recording is high quality.

    Story
"Far Better than film or TV"

The first thing that struck me about this audio book is how modern it is, bearing in mind how old the story is.
In my opinion it rates with any modern story or films like 28 weeks later and 28 days later or any post-apocalyptic fiction currently available, It is very difficult to describe just how good this audio-book is without giving away any spoilers but John Wyndham's narration is an instant hook and will hold onto you for the entire length of this story.
The bottom line is that this is a very well written story, clearly narrated and entertaining.

"You really get into the whole world and mood"

I loved this. I was unsure whether to go for it because I'd seen the film when I was young and I guess I thought I wouldn't need to read/hear the book. But I read the reviews and thought I should probably check it out. One of the other reviews suggested that 28 days later had been influenced by day of the triffids and I totally agree. The whole mood that's created in the book with london becomming a totally different place is identical to the mood of 28 days later.
The voice is deep and full of character and by the end of the book I was well immersed in post apocalyptic world!

    "An old favourite rejuvenated"

What is it that keeps one captured and raptured? Having read this story many years ago I found it absolutely riveting ... my mind knows this is one person reading but I 'hear' a cast. Pace and pitch superbly suited to the unfolding of this suspenseful story. Quality story, quality 'reader / performer'

"John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris."

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Being a fan of Wyndhams' work on paper I was hoping that the narration would not spoil the audiobook, I was not disappointed. I felt that Bill himself was telling me the story. I would recommend this audiobook to anyone as a general listen. It is, in fact, a classic.

    "Classic SiFi"

This is a very well narrated version of a classic ScFi story. The book has many twists and turns and can provoke deeper thought about the consequences of society being overturned by a catastrophic global event. On the other hand, it can just be taken as an exciting adventure, underpinned by a subtle love story that drives it forward. I first read this book whilst in my teens and I was pleased that it still entertained me, and provoked my thoughts, many years later. Buy this download and enjoy hours of listening pleasure in you next car journeys.

    "Gripping"

A thrilling story, well told. The language has clearly dated, but that simply helps to place the story in time. The slow awakening dread of what faces the sighted survivors is revealed at a masterful pace. In all a strangely uplifting tale despite the devastating and all too realistic human catastrophes.

    "Good book, great narration"

I have to say that Samuel West narrated this book extremely well. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, although was a little disappointed with the final third. This said, it has a number of excellent moments in it that I will remember for a long time.

I have read this book umpteen times but still find it a great story. The story is brilliantly captured in this speech version. Samual West sounds just as I imagined the hero would sound. Well worth acquiring this audio book.

"Just love everything to do with this story!"

We are both big fans of anything to do with this book, we even have the original tv series on dvd. This is an excellent audio book and a very enjoyable way of enjoying the story.

We often keep going back and listening to this audio book because its great, this is in terms of the story and also the fact its narrated very well. I would have to say this would be in our top 10 audio books and is very much one of our firm favourites.

Highly recommended and if you haven't heard this story before and you like sci-fi/end of the world then you'll love this!
