Summary

New York Times best seller! For fans of Between Shades of Gray and All the Light We Cannot See, best-selling author Ruta Sepetys returns to WWII in this epic novel that shines a light on one of the war's most devastating - yet unknown - tragedies.

World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, many with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer to safety. Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all 10,000 people - adults and children alike - aboard must fight for the same thing: Survival.

Told in alternating points of view and perfect for fans of Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer Prize-winning All the Light We Cannot See, Erik Larson's Dead Wake, and Elizabeth Wein's Printz Honor Book Code Name Verity, this masterful work of historical fiction is inspired by the real-life tragedy that was the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff - the greatest maritime disaster in history. As she did in Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys unearths a shockingly little-known casualty of a gruesome war, and proves that humanity and love can prevail, even in the darkest of hours.

Incredible tale of humanity at it's best and worst

If you could sum up Salt to the Sea in three words, what would they be?

Wonderful, heartbreaking and honest.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The final scenes are heartbreaking but justified. It never felt like the author was writing a story, rather she was narrating someone else's.

absolutely stunning writing

such depth and raw emotion is portrayed throughout this. Beautifully written! Author handled the story delicately whilst providing realism. Great choice with narrators!

Good Listen

Using Actors with American accents was the wrong decision but apart from that it's a good listen.

Sad but necessary listen. Great story.

A very interesting account of having to flee in WW2. It’s always the civilians who get caught up in the tragedies and this is very youth based. Very well written, telling the story through different eyes.
A great listen, compelling and sad in places but so so necessary to know.

Beautiful but heartbreaking

Brilliantly composed story from a multitude of view points. Story, characters and performance all felt incredibly authentic. Harrowing insight into a part of WW2 I know very little about.

Breathtaking!

Equally heartbreaking and heartwarming, this is a story everyone should read to think more deeply about what war means, what humanity means. Dickensian genius for scope and character portrayal. Both wonderfully written and expertly performed. Can’t wait to discover the next inspiring gem from the Audible treasure hoard. Bravo!

Loved it. Even teared-up at times.

Loved it. Effective story that can bring a tear to your eye. It did to mine. I enjoyed the style of writing. Bringing the introduction back into the conclusion to connect it all nicely. Overall listening to it kind of makes me want to read it too. Narration was great with different readers and truly good annotations. Yet being such an emotional piece I would love to read some parts and sit and stir with the thoughts they gave me. I know I could have paused the audio to do so, this was my first audiobook and suppose I will just have to get used to the story moving on when I'm not ready to move with it. It was still a great listen but for the type of reader I am I would probably pick up the actual book as well.
