Summary

Ever since she was a tiny child, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won't stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world.

Though her journey begins alone, she soon finds companions: Mogget, whose seemingly harmless feline form hides a powerful and perhaps malevolent spirit; and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.

With threats on all sides and only each other to trust, the three must travel deep into the Old Kingdom, toward a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death, and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.

A tale of dark secrets, deep love and dangerous magic, Sabriel introduces Garth Nix as an exceptional new talent.

Don't miss books two and three of this trilogy! Lirael and Abhorsen.

Critic reviews

"It's an epic journey in a world as richly realized as Middle-earth and much darker and bloodier than Harry's trials at Hogwarts...Tim Curry brings authority to the reading, grounding the fantastic elements with nuance of character and depth of emotion." ( AudioFile)
"Rich, complex, involving, hard to put down, this first novel...is excellent high fantasy." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A page-turner for sure." ( Booklist)

one of the greats of the genre

I absolutely love this book and the performance by Tim Curry; an absolute must listen - I have lost count of how many times I have listened to it over the last 11 years! Never gets old.

Good narration

I enjoyed this book when I read it after it had been published. The world Garth Nix conjours up is believable from beginning to end. The narration Tim Curry is first date and I look forward to more of this duo to listen to. I usually listen before sleep, but wanted to hear more and spent most of the day listening to the story unfold with Nix's very descriptive words and Curry's fabulous rendition .

Female hero, necromancy, wise-ass sidekick cat

The whole series is amazing and Tim Curry gives an incredible performance. This book has everything, strong female protagonist, smart mouthed sidekick with a dark hidden secret, necromancy magic and the unexpected arrival of the mysterious stranger

book is fantastic

At the beginning I struggled to listen to Tim Curry's narration as I felt it was to rough for the story that I loved so much. However I pushed though, because the story is just so amazing!

An Adventure into Death

I loved this book as a teenager, and I still love it now. Sabriel is an amazing book, it's a coming of age adventure into death, battling evil forces, and journeying across an old kingdom of risen dead with a pair of strange companions and a set of bells for company. It sounds like the strangest thing ever but I implore anyone to read this book, I've recommended it to many and it is genuinely one of the best books I've ever read.

Tim Curry fabulous, Garth Nix imaginative and dark

Who better to give voice to undead monsters and elemental spirits than Tim Curry? He also gives voice beautifully to the heroine of the piece, Sabriel, and other feminine or ethereal beings.
I was in the Old Kingdom every moment I had free time. A dark, adventurous, mysterious story, where Nix had woven together a beautiful magic system and fully fledged world and mythos.
