Publisher's Summary

You can be a VII if you give everything.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked - surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed...and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose - and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

    Story
    "Surprisingly addictive"
What made the experience of listening to Pawn the most enjoyable?

The narrator did a wonderful job bringing the story to life. A well written, unique take on the dystopian young adult genre.

What other book might you compare Pawn to and why?

The book can and surely will be compared to Hunger Games. The heroine has the strength we all admire in Katniss--the two share the impoverished background and lack of control in regards to the situations they end up facing.

What does Lameece Issaq bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Lameece did a fantastic job differentiating the characters--breathing accurate personality into the dialogue. Simply outstanding.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    A pawn becomes a Queen.

    Any additional comments?

Well worth the listen/read. I highly recommend.

"don't have to pay attention while commuting"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

It's a young adult read that doesn't transition enough into being enjoyable for adults too. The issues are a bit too simplistic. I'd try to enrich the subplots, but then it would lose its place in its genre. So, leave the book as it, it just wasn't right for me.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

It was good as it was actually. I'd have psychoanalyzed the cast a bit more. More followthrough.

Which character – as performed by Lameece Issaq – was your favorite?

Can't recall. Enjoyed the reading overall though.

Did Pawn inspire you to do anything?

Pawn put me in mind of Hunger Games, wherein you can rebuild a lot about a person's externals.

    Any additional comments?

Good book for listening to but not giving your full attention to. So like, while driving, doing errands, etc.

"Not as strong as others in this ilk"

Another in the young heroine leads the rebellion breed of young adult novels. Not a strong of character development or plot as Hunger Games or Divergent but an enjoyable listening experience. Kitty has just turned legal age and must be tested for assignment to one of the six classes of citizens in future America. Her disappointing upbringing in an orphanage in Washington D.C. leads to a less than satisfactory class and work assignment in a distant city away from her slightly younger lover interest. After seeking an alternate life style on the edges of society she is recruited by the heads of the country to serve as a replacement for a deceased third in line successor to the throne. To tell you more would spoil the enjoyment of Pawn.

The story makes several half-hearted stabs at making social commentary about the divisions which separate the ‘haves’ and the ‘haves not’ of the country and the abuses which corrupts those with absolute power. The author inflicts no particular judgment allowing the reader to decide for themselves the proper level of outrage they wish to assign to any particular atrocities exposed through Kitty’s assumption of the secretly deceased niece’s life.

Pawn is a perfectly adequate expenditure of a credit and may just be the start of as entertaining series of novels. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

    "Very dumb and juvenile"

The story has so much more potential. The idea is interesting but makes me think of the Divergent series. The story was too silly. There is no substance to it. Just fluff

    "Stupid character makes foolish decisions."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

We're told through the clunky narrative that the main character, Kitty, is surprisingly intelligent. I can't see how.She cannot make a single logical connections herself without someone outright explaining it to her. "Whhhhat? The guy so evil he's practically twirling his mustache wants to do me harm? Le gasp!" She cannot read (yes, she has dyslexia but so do others without being 100% illiterate), and she consistently makes foolish decisions. "Oh sure, I'll become a prostitute, but that doesn't mean I'll have to sleep with the men, right?" Idiot.

Has Pawn turned you off from other books in this genre?

Honestly, I'm starting to think I should be more choosy with YA. I love the genre, I love dystopia, but MY GOD was this book bad. I'm giving them a break for a bit.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lameece Issaq’s performances?

She seemed unpracticed in separating narration and dialog. Not terrible, but not really good either.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I stopped four hours in. So no?

    Any additional comments?

Wish I could get my money back, but I bought this one like a year ago and didn't bother listening until now. Shame.

    "Not Bad"
Where does Pawn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the first one, but I like it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kitty, because she showed a lot of courage to step forward to be a VII and leave all of what she knew behind. Thankfully she got to see Benjy again.

Have you listened to any of Lameece Issaq’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. I don't like how she narrarates the men/boy's voices.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, when they went to the place where Knox had gotten the guns, and Lila was there.

    Any additional comments?

    No.

    "Terrible"

Sorry this is the only word that comes to mind but from the moment the reader began I was disappointed. It sounded like being at a bad poetry reading. The problem is that she read the narrators words, instead of acting them, being them, living them. It sounded insincere half the time or else just lacking in passion and conviction for the character's thoughts/being.

For a while I thought it was just the poor reading that was making the story annoying (since I was actually very excited about the plot and to see how it progressed), but about 3/4 of the way through I was able to see the author's words for what they were and finally decide that the writing itself was not very good either. There were many moments in the story where the characters talked through an issue for way too long, slightly changing the wording of their same argument. It was exhausting. The female protagonist as well was incredibly underwhelming, being essentially spineless and completely lacking in power until a moment at the end when she was finally forced to make an obvious and important/critical decision. She was unimpressive to say the least and the antagonists were definitely meow interesting characters. I think this story had a lot of potential, it just needed some more thinking through and better editing for conciseness and flow.

Would you consider the audio edition of Pawn to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version so I have no idea

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pawn?

When Kitty wakes up masked. Also when she finds out what happens elsewhere.

What about Lameece Issaq’s performance did you like?

not as strong as some other voice actors but not bad. Could be a bit monotone but after a while you hear the subtle differences in character speech.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The hunt that took place elsewhere.
