Can we overcome our past?
Katie Parker is about to get a new life - whether she wants one or not. With her mom in prison, and her father AWOL, Katie is sent to live with a squeaky-clean family who could have their own sitcom. She launches a full-scale plan to get sent back to the girls home, when she finds herself in over her head...and heart.
When Katie and her new crowd get into significant trouble at school, she finds her punishment is restoring a historic theater with a crazy grandma who goes by the name of Mad Maxine. In the midst of her punishment, Katie uncovers family secrets that run deep, and realizes she's not the only one with a pain-filled past. Katie must decide if she'll continue her own family's messed up legacy, or embrace a new beginning in this place called In Between.

"Religious Book Cloaked as Secular"
Before I explain the 1 star, I will note that the performance itself was well done. Props to the narrator.
As to the book itself, it turns out to have a blatant Christian agenda despite being marketed as secular. Do this you crave oversimplified characters and a black-and-white world of rigid thinking? Do you gravitate towards stereotypes like the dutiful wife cooking all family meals or tattooed/dyed hair people representing all that is evil in the world? Would you like to feel morally superior because of your Christian identity? Does blatant, ubiquitous Christian messaging trump believable characters/events? Do you have "the calling" to foster a child but need the reassurance that it's OK to inflict your religious beliefs on them? If so, this book is for you.
Truly horrible, even for christian fiction. I would normally keep such disdain for a book to myself, but since the author is being deceptive with marketing, I'm must speak up, lest some unknowing child receive this book.
" stubborn and crazy this is"
so Katie is the stubborn rebellious teenager who does not want to be where she at in-between is not a place for her Meli is an over loving mother that is so preppy that you wonder how she can withstand it. the grandma is to die for she makes this book she's the great grandmother that you wish you had but at the same time you wish you could lock her away James is the Foster dad and he is a little bit on the blunt sarcastic side he's stubborn but he does have his wit. she gets involved with people of the wrong crowd but I wonder if she gets out of it. the good kids are not hurt her style and this whole church thing is just one big ball of fun for her. take a look at the book I think many people would love it you'll be laughing and you will think that this book is great I got it because it was free and I paid a dollar for the audible who can resist a dollar and now I bought the other three there great.
"Wholesome, Fun and Endearing"
Solid storyline and interesting background. Foster care and Foster parenting have a bit of stigma attached to them and some readers might hesitate, and would miss out. The characters are fun and not predictable, but believable. This is a great summer read and appropriate for even Jr. High age, but is not juvenile. Just an easy, relaxing read with a bit of moral goodness for a change!
Melody Carlson has some books out that are clean and fun in this way.
Her voices were distinguished and consistent.
When Katie was in trouble and expecting the very worst, but things turned out differently than one would expect.
liked the expression in the narrator s voice. inspirational for a young girl. cute story.
"just what I needed"
Another great and timely story by Jenny Jones. great story filled with God's truths, humor (literally laughing out loud at times) and tugs on the heartstrings.
Excellently narrated. YA material. Cute story. Even though I'm well past my YA years, I thoroughly enjoyed the snarky sense of humor of the main character. This book left me wanting to find out what happens next.
Wonderful story. Reminiscent of Junie b. jones by Jenny b. jones. I will be reading the rest and listening to the next audio production!
