The No. 1 New York Times bestseller DIVERGENT – a major motion picture in 2014.
For sixteen-year-old Tris, the world changes in a heartbeat when she is forced to make a terrible choice. Turning her back on her family, Tris ventures out, alone, determined to find out where she truly belongs.
Shocked by the brutality of her new life, Tris can trust no one. And yet she is drawn to a boy who seems to both threaten and protect her. The hardest choices may yet lie ahead….
The first book in the DIVERGENT series that has swept the globe – selling millions of copies world-wide.
Critic reviews
"Though Galvin’s narration is concentrated on giving Tris the perfect voice, she never neglects the secondary characters. Poignant moments with Tris’s mother and Four, her leader and love, are subtly nuanced to let listeners hear the terror Tris often hides.... listeners will hold their breath waiting to see if she can survive the day." Easy listening - bit of a page turner
Listened to this after watching the film. I have done this so many times but the film made more sense with its sequence if events and four seemed more believable in the film rather than a bit of 18 who shows too many weaknesses rather than strength to tris

So much better than the film
Tris is a real hero and her character development is well written. The story is gripping and the narrator is excellent.

a little slow to start but gets going nicely
I enjoyed this book, as I wanted to listen before I watched the film. I felt it started a little as many others did but funnily enough the story did go in a different direction enough to keep my interest. The narrator was also please to to listen to, as I am rather choosey about voices even though I can't tell what I like about one from the next. worth your credit

Wow - I was simply blown away!
This is not my typical genre for listening to, however, the reviews persuaded me to give it a go and I have honestly never been more delightfully surprised in my life! What a gripping, action-packed story (with a hint of romance yet to come).
The story concept is an extremely intelligent one: the world has changed - there is a new way of governing and reducing conflict by separating individuals into 'factions' according to one of five character traits. But what happens when individuals do not have one clear character trait? Well, they are the 'divergent' and present a threat to this new society as they have the ability to think more freely....
The emotions this book evoked were incredibly powerful: I was annoyed at the obsequious and self-denial of the abnegation; irritated by the supercilious nature of the erudite; amused at the forthright nature of the candour; at peace with the amity, and both exhilarated and shocked by the energy and ruthlessness of the dauntless. The story was graphic and violent on many occasions but this was well balanced by the vulnerability of the two main characters: Triss and Four, and the developing tenderness in their relationship.
The narration by Emma Galvin grew on me over time, although initially I felt it was very monotone and this made it difficult to distinguish between the characters, their thoughts and their speech. I probably became accustomed to it over time and felt she injected more contour and intonation into her narration as the story developed.
Without a doubt, this is a powerful and gripping read with a strong and well thought-out plot - it had me on the edge of my seat throughout and has left me desperate to read the next book!

Enjoyed more than I thought I would
Wanted to see the film, but thought I'd listen to the book first. Hopefully the book won't ruin the film for me, as The Martian did (absolutely amazing book, film didn't even come close to how good the book is).
First, the narration took me a chapter or two to get used to, she speaks in a kind of monotone voice like Jayden Smith in After Earth, but like the example, once you understand she's speaking like that for a reason things become easier to grasp.
Story was quite god, enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was weak and a bit predictable at times, so I'm in no rush to listen to the second and third book, but will listen to them this year to see how this story ends.
Would recommend to people who like teen-drama / adventure.
Would recommend to a female audience as it has a very strong female lead.
