Summary
When Michael Palin was researching his novel Hemingway's Chair, his interest was stimulated by Hemingway's appetite for travel and "Papa's" evocations of the places he knew. In pursuit of Hemingway, Palin begins at the beginning, in Oak Park, Idaho, then travels to Italy where Hemingway served in the Ambulance Brigade in the First World War. Then on to Paris in the "Roaring Twenties", bull-running at Pamplona and Hemingway's love affair with Spain. Hemingway became disillusioned and returned to the States, where he lived on Key West in Florida before moving to Sun Valley, Idaho, until the Spanish civil war recalled him.

excruciatingly annoying background music
What did you like best about Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure? What did you like least?
like everything by palin the book is well crafted and read but the background music is so intrusive that I have yet to read more than a few minutes at a time without throwing the headphones across the room.
Who was your favorite character and why?
n/a
How could the performance have been better?
scrap the background music
Did Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure inspire you to do anything?
ensure any future purchases are music free
Any additional comments?
it is a shame that such poor production standards have been allowed to mar what would otherwise presumably be an enjoyable read/listen. I won't be buying anything further from this publisher (or whatever they're called)

Irritating
I couldn't get through this because of the extremely annoying use of background music that just wouldn't fade out and seemed to go on and on and on. It also seemed to be a 'Think of a Theme' travelogue that are so popular these days but also seem to verge on the utterly pointless. Maybe if you're a big Hemmingway fan you'll find something of interest here, otherwise give it a miss.

Production!!
I have loved every TV series, book and audio book by Michael Palin, but felt that this audio book was let down by the poor production and especially the awful unnecessary background music. Remove it and it would be up there with his other works.

Could not bear the repetitive background music.
I love Michael Palin's voice but there is annoying trumpet music on a loop, most of the way through. I had to give up listening. I really wanted to hear the story as the book is out of print. Didnt an editor listen to it before publishing. so disappointing. would like a refund but cancelled Audible membership as I have enough books for now.

Personal journey of an icon
Where does Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very relaxing and informative insight into the life of a 20th century icon. Very much a personal journey read in an amiable style which so characterises Palin. Learned some new things but probably the best part was the feeling that you are actually there in each location he visits.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure?
It was all memorable, I loved it.
What does Michael Palin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I can't imagine that the experience would be quite the same without Michael reading it. He leaves room for your mind to imagine without intruding.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
It's already a TV series!
Any additional comments?
Get it.

Great Listen
Palin seemed to enjoy telling the story, which I think matters. Two travel legends, but totally different people.

he lived life to the full, until he couldn't.
A complex story of human frailty, cruelty and hope, coupled with the perils of fame and fortune. Michael Palin tells this story very sensitively. I'm not particularly a fan of Hemingway's books, but he lived his full measure of life, until he couldn't anymore.

The Best Palin Adventure
This is the most enjoyable Palin adventure. I am not a big fan of Hemingway but the passion and location hopping that Palin brings just brings it all to life.

Unnecessary annoying background music
As always, thank you Michael for another great book. It was spoilt a little by annoying background music fading in and out at various places, would be much better without that. Nonetheless a great adventure well told, recommend.
