Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Classic, 2014

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby. There, he has a firsthand view of Gatsby’s lavish West Egg parties - and of his undying love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan.

After meeting and losing Daisy during the war, Gatsby has made himself fabulously wealthy. Now, he believes that his only way to true happiness is to find his way back into Daisy’s life, and he uses Nick to try to reach her. What happens when the characters’ fantasies are confronted with reality makes for a startling conclusion to this iconic masterpiece.

This special audio edition joins the upcoming film - as well as many other movie, radio, theater, and even video-game adaptations - as a fitting tribute to the cultural significance of Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age classic, widely regarded as one of the greatest stories ever told.

Beautifully read, great story

I really enjoyed this book, and loved the narration. The tone felt perfect for the story.

Beautifully cold.

Fitzgerald's writing is wondrously beautiful to hear. At once, evocative and warm, it merely accentuates the coldness of the Gatsby story and the characters which l found to be brutally unappealing in every way. Gyllenhaal's rendition is superb: the warmth of his voice simply highlighting all the more the inadequacy of the novel's characters. The language is wonderful but the book left me deeply unmoved.

Underwhelming

I didn't enjoy the film, but after so many remakes I thought the book would make sense of it all.

Oh well.

Great Narrator

I could have listened to the book on youtube for free, but I paid money to listen to this specific narrator. I was NOT disappointed. Absolutely phenomenal performance.

Certainly Better Than The Film

I listened to this before watching the film. The book described characters really well and found Gatsby a delightful character although a little deluded in the fact he can't have everything as he wants.

Would certainly recommend.

Better enjoyed as an audiobook

I had read this before but it did not grab me as special but I wanted to try again as part of my reading of the classics. The audiobook enabled me to savour it at a slower pace and think about it more. The characters became deeper and the superficiality and amorality of their lives became the point and representative of the time and place. The reader does a great job of bringing the people to life and production quality is good.
