Summary

Visceral, disturbing and chilling in its realism, World War Z is perhaps the most famous work from the world's foremost expert on our undead counterparts. Paired with the equally gripping The Zombie Survival Guide, there is no better preparation for the inevitable uprising.

"The end was near." Voices from the Zombie War.

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Better than the film....

I found some of the performers a bit dull, which slowed the pace of the story. It is a good interpetation, but I had hoped for better.

Better that the film, have you seen the trailer?

To be honest I bought this book because the film was coming out and my best friend has been talking about this book for years. I was surprised though. Although it is presented in a very different format to most book. It could be considered an anthology of short stories. The descriptions come together to form a compelling narrative of the zombie war. This made me feel very bad about not trusting my friend's opinion sooner, in my defense his nickname is "Waffle". I do suggest that any zombie fan gives this a go. Especially fans of the original Romero style zombies. Very good. To be honest I originally rated this a 4* rating but writing this review made me realize how much I enjoyed it.

A Documentary Like No Other

While the original audio book had a stellar cast, some of whose performances I loved, perhaps less recognisable voices added to the already well written atmosphere that we are listening to real accounts. There are some weak links, but I am glad they have kept the theme of multiple actors, adding depth and life to Brooks' undead saga.

The Ultimate Zombie Smash

This is the ultimate zombie saga (zaga? I’ll see myself out) and one of the most immersive stories around. The whole thing is told in the style of an account of the war against the undead, as voiced by its survivors. And it is main character Max Brooks (yes, as in the author) who travels the US to record their accounts. With seven narrators, the audiobook version is just as slick and beautifully produced as the blockbuster film it went on to become.

Listened to this half a dozen times

Really good story. A lot better than the film which doesn’t even remotely follow this book.
