Editor reviews
Brandon Sanderson’s brilliant second instalment in the epic fantasy series The Stormlight Archive, Words of Radiance, rivals anything dished up by other masters of the genre. In this thrilling audiobook, various factions vie for control of the magical Shard artefacts whose mysterious power is in great demand. As war looms on the horizon, aristocratic dynasties struggle for power. Available from Audible, Words of Radiance: The Stormlight Archive, Book 2 is narrated by the team of Kate Reading and Michael Kramer and is perfect for fans of Game of Thrones.
Summary
Book two of the Stormlight Archive.
From the best-selling author who completed Robert Jordan's epic Wheel of Time series comes an original new creation that matches anything else in modern fantasy for epic scope, thrilling imagination, superb characters and sheer addictiveness. Return to a planet swept by apocalyptic storms, a world tipping into war as aristocratic families move to control the shard blades and shard plates, ancient artifacts from a past civilisation that can win wars.
As the world tips into a war for control of the mythical artifacts of power made from Shard, characters are swept up into new dangers which will threaten their integrity and their lives. Huge ideas-filled, world-spanning fantasy from a master of the genre.

Excelent story somewhat let down by the narration
As with book 1, the story rounds up nicely in a satisfying way to make this thoroughly enjoyable in its own right whist the overarching story leaves you still itching for more. The only downside is the lack of quality narration, from wrong words spoken and mispronunciations to it being read in an often monotone, uninterested voice, it leaves much to be desired, but thankfully it doesnt take too much away from this otherwise fantastic novel. I've probably just been spoiled after listening to Name of the Wind directly before this series, which has excellent narration.

Masterpiece
Where to begin. First off this would make an absolutely incredible TV series. Normally I would never say that about a book I love but the writing is so vivid and the characters are so distinct that my imagination is on fire from listening to this. It makes Game of Thrones seem drab and pointless by comparison.
The magic system and world are so original without being gimmicky and the pacing is spot on. This is the second long book in the series but at no point has it felt like a chore. My wife is probably going to be relieved that I've finished so that I don't sit with my headphones in of an evening but I'm going to be counting down the days until book 3 is out.
Bravo Brandon Sanderson! Highly recommend this series!

Assume
It is an addictive storyline. We go to be at 9pm. One night I listened to it as I dropped off. I became so engrossed that it was past one o'clock in the morning before I forced myself, reluctantly, to turn it off.

Epic story, strong characters and well delivered.
Epic story, strong characters and well delivered. Wasn't sure at the start of the first book, it was a slow burn. But once the concept had been established it just continued to get better and better.... book 3 would be good NOW please... I don't want to wait!

48 Hours of Enjoyable Fantasy
I'll try and be as short as the book is long. For me to listen to a 48 hour fantasy novel in just a few days and then look forward to the next book says a lot. The plot line, ideas and pacing are the best things about this epic, and will, I think, lead most people to find some extra time in their day to listen to this quite addictive story experience.
On the down side the book often descends into good old fashioned pulp literature. There is a generous sprinkling of clichéd moments, and the dialogue especially can get fairly dire. When a royal High Prince of a warrior realm utters the lines 'Oh Yeah - whatever' you know that something has gone wrong! Most characters tend to suffer from this blight at some point and in one form or another, but I must admit it amused me rather than annoyed me as images of John Wayne ('now listen soldier it won't be easy, but we've got a job to do'), and Han Solo (just stick with me kid and this scam can work), rose up from the pages.
The performance is another slightly mixed bag. Having listened to the Wheel of Time I find the two narrators quite comfortable and easy to listen to, and generally they do a good job with the huge range of characters. But there are some stand out flops in the performances - the phoney French accent is particularly unforgettable, as is the biblically epic voice of the Storm Father.
Regardless of all of these problems, it's well worth a credit and should give you many hours of enjoyment (and the odd snigger).
