United Earth burns.
The Swarm runs rampant across our space. We mourn the loss of thousands of ships and millions of fallen comrades. Billions of fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers - all gone, all dead. It is time we end this, for our moment has come.
But victory never comes without sacrifice. Heroes are not taught nor trained but forged in blood and ashes. Our grandchildren's history books will tell our story and glorify the heroes and legends.
The Swarm will be conquered; we will prevail. At any price.

Not too impressed with this book. Storyline good but so drasn out and ..... no infuriatingly tames ages to get on with the story. I was very bored and kept fast forwarded the book many times.
I'll write this for entire trilogy. You can read book 1 through 3. But there was 1 thing : Deus ex machina" like event through out the entire series (yes I don't mean time traveling). Book 1 was ok (few or none ) book 2 (several "deus ex" like events) book 3 "deus ex machina" on the bigger scale (plot impact I mean). You may still like the series itself (story is ok, characters are ok - every thing is ok.... but not great and solutions that "save the day" ... could be more subtly introduce into story or better justified.
Writer, reader, now an avid listener, why hadn't I discovered this before!
There are so many great things about this book. I am sure I'm going to forget something. But, I wanted first to say what a nightmare it was waiting for it to finally hit the UK... I could see it on my US account... but nope wouldn't show or download for weeks, I wonder why?
Kinda glad I was on holiday as well, or I'd have been going more crazy waiting on this one.
Anyway, so worth the wait, and I'm really floored by the outcome.
SPOILERS ----------- Don't read till later.
Here are some of my fav and most emotional moments. (not in any given order)
The dreadnoughts's first destruction, fantastic moment. But then...
Granger's negotiation with the Sclura (sp) and learning about the billions of deaths he caused. Because they carry so many 'embryos' inside.
Malakof's death, and then of course Isaacson's haha, brilliant.
The fact that the Swarm isn't the Swarm they thought it was.
The CAG committing suicide.
Ballsy's promotion and subsequent obsession still with Fishtail. I'm still not totally understanding the why's here, and that's freaked me out more than anything, why he was so obsessed, etc. But, it was still emotional, and I really wanted some romantic element here, or maybe that's for their future. Who knows.
I did find there was a good bit of science from Shelby in here, which was very well presented, even all the science. I'm not a hard sci fi gal, but I thought there was a lot of thought gone into this, be it true or not I don't think I'll know but it didn't detract form the story at all and brought all the puzzling pieces about the swarm together. So that really helps us understand.
Granger meeting himself, as the sick old man that went through the singularity was cool. Even Fishtail and Ballsy's story arch there, where ballsy shoots his own down in order that the 'enemy don't get him' believing that the Granger in that zone is evil controlled by the swarm. Such a brilliant turn with the writing. We know it's happened, we saw it form all angles earlier, but finally understanding it as the characters do. Brilliant writing.
With the injured Matriarch and the Sclura helping Granger, despite their pain. As she died I'd tears... so so sad, all those babies inside her :( I wished there was a way to get them out before they were lost. I hoped they might save a few, but it was too late. Bummer.
And of course, Granger's sacrifice. To send himself back to start the process again, or has it all changed. The timeline so weird and the fact no one understands it... don't think I ever will.
But again, so very well written. Even the good bye scene for Tim and Shelby... uggh you were killing me here guys.
I did wonder what the trial was for and the aftermath, but the crew wanting Shelby as their Captain was a great ending to it, open of course. And there was the part with the president and malakof... so open ended. I know there is more coming. :)
As for the performance. OUTSTANDING of course. I'm a big fan of Greg's... (biased, maybe) but if it wasn't for the Nick Webb and Greg Tremblay Team... I wouldn't be as much of a fan.
Keep on working together, and I'll keep on buying, between this and promises of more spin offs. I'm hooked. :)
I loved this trilogy; I found it difficult to put down. Just for once, the ending did the storyline justice and I thoroughly enjoyed it, once again.
I will look forward to the next offering from Nick Webb.
"Much More Than Just another Military SciFi Opera"
This is an excellent series. The science while arguable is very well and consistently presented. Very good characters and an excellent ending to the series that places it well into true SciFi instead of just a military series that happens to be in space.
Well Done Nick Webb!!!
I look forward to what you give us next.
"Good, overall. Cheap read though."
This had some very interesting ideas as a series, and some fantastically hilarious points. However, i was highly disappointed in the ending and in how the "Secret Government Plots" stuff ended up playing themselves out. I was very interesting in learning more about the presidents and having them be a part of the story, both american and Russian but it all ended very.... anti-climatically.
Eh, it was ok. I was disappointed in each book individually, but all together it was okay. The ending was.. highly anti-climatically.
The voice and performance of the reader was fantastic though. Sadly, the story just didn't quite live up to what i was hoping for, but the performance was first rate.
"Mr Webb sure has a big hit here."
Great Series can't wait for more I have the Independence which I am starting now.
"Perfect ending in chapter 81."
I recommend not reading the last 2 chapters. They create a plot twist that is not needed or wanted.
"Wow!! What a, ride!!"
VERY VERY GOOD!!!
PLEASE KEEP IT UP!!! Read it twice now, thing I
will read it, again!!
This entire series has been Great, but Book 3 is over the top!!! Must Read! A super good story line that has many unexpected twists, and all were explained before the book ended. All successfully were linked back through the first two books! I simply stand and applaud Mr Webb for an outstanding book. And the voicing really brought it home. I like this book. Thank you!
"Another great performance of a great story"
This was not how I expected the trilogy to end, and I couldn't be happier. I can usually figure out where a story is going, and I'm always glad when I'm wrong.
"I was blown away - it was the best sci-fi drama I've read in years"
This book, like the series, has been entirely gripping, fascinating, and suspenseful at every turn. All the puzzles, motivations, and events fit together in a masterpiece tapestry of a story that was one of the most interesting, suspenseful, and unpredictable stories I've read in years.
While some of the specifics aren't realistic beyond the 4th wall, the story arc is meticulously faithful to its own material. It's no hard sifi but that doesn't even matter.
This was a review of both the book and the overall trilogy.
Furthermore, Greg Tremblay did a fantastic job at narrating this story.
