In the divided land of England, Elizabeth Barnabus has been living a double life - as both herself and as her brother, the private detective.
Witnessing the hanging of Alice Carter, the false duchess, Elizabeth resolves to throw the Bullet Catcher's Handbook into the fire and forget her past. If only it were that easy!
There is a new charitable organisation in town, run by some highly respectable women. But something doesn't feel right to Elizabeth. Perhaps it is time for her fictional brother to come out of retirement for one last case.
Her unstoppable curiosity leads her to a dark world of body snatching, unseemly experimentation, politics and scandal. Never was it harder for a woman in a man's world.

Having loved the first part in this trilogy, the bullet catcher's daughter, I had high expectations for this book.
They were met, this is a thrilling and gripping story, with twists and turns. The world of the gaslit empire is very cleverly put together, and in Elizabeth Barnabas we have an intelligent and unusual heroin.
Gemma Whelan brings the character to life brilliantly with her narration,
Probably not, the bullet catcher series was most enjoyable, but not perhaps gripping. It was a little predictable but its a nice listen and I particularly love Gemma Whelan's voice.
I like long books so this trilogy suited me:I love to get to know the characters and feel I can enter their world (the Gas Lit Empire). If you like trilogies like the Name of the Wind (Rothfuss) then you will also like this trilogy too. The world is perhaps not as richly imagined as that of Pullman, Rothfuss and Rawling and it could perhaps have benefitted from being darker in nature but I would have liked a 4th book to keep going. The characters Rod Duncan creates are likeable and clear, the situations plausible in the context of the world they are in. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
The alternate reality "The Gas-Lit Empire" - a really good, well-worked and researched alternate world. Not a monocle nor a clockwork world-eating spider in sight.
Good narration and voice-acting.
Please Mr Duncan, may I have some more?
