Publisher's Summary

The wizard Margle the Horrendous takes special pride in never killing his enemies. Instead, he transforms them into various accursed forms and locks them away in his castle. His halls are filled with his collection of fallen heroes and defeated villains, along with a few ordinary folk who were just unfortunate enough to draw Margles attention. It's Nessy's duty to tend this castle. Its a lot of work, but she manages, taking pride in housekeeping talents that keep the castle from collapsing into chaos. But when Margle suddenly dies, everything begins to unravel.

Nessy finds herself surrounded by monsters, curses, a door that should never be opened, and one very deadly dark wizardess. Nessy doesnt have might or magic on her side; shes just a kobold: short, furry, and sensible. Her allies aren't much better: a voice without a body, an angry fruit bat, a monster under her bed, a wizard in a jar (or some of him, anyway), and a one-eyed, one-horned, flying, purple, people eater. It would be smarter to walk away, but taking care of the castle is Nessy's job, and thats just what she intends to do.If only she could find time to polish the silver while beating back the forces of darkness.

engaging characters and loved the concept. A younger audience (tens/teens) would love it. i wanted a few more chapters to see what happened after!

    "Delightful!"

This is such a fun and enjoyable listen. The story is as crazy as you would expect from A. Lee Martinez. The characters are so off the wall you can't help but love them. The book would not be nearly as much fun without the wonderful narration. The different voices are what really sets this book apart. As previously noted, if you don't enjoy imaginative narration then you won't enjoy this.

    "Enjoyable!"

I know the other reviewers have disliked the narration, but my 12 year old daughter and I are enjoying it and are finding the different voices and accents rather funny. The book has enough twists and turns to keep us looking forward to the next car ride to find out how Nessy will ultimately save the castle and its inhabitants.

    "Good story, bad narrator."
    Any additional comments?

The story was pretty good, but not one of Martinez's best. I agree with the reviewer that said this may fly better with the YA crowd. The narration was hard to listen to. It made me feel like I was a 6 year old getting read a story at bedtime.

"Good Story; Ruined by Imitation Voices"

The story is entertaining but if you dislike a narrator impersonating voices avoid this one.

    "Curses in the Castle"
What made the experience of listening to Too Many Curses the most enjoyable?

    A. Lee Martinez writes great characters and Suzanne Toren brings them to life with her multitude of voices.

What did you like best about this story?

The sheer variety of characters, and strange locations in one castle.

What about Suzanne Toren’s performance did you like?

She does an amazing job with male and female voices. A Scottish bat, blubbering jar of wizard, and a rascally skull have a conversation and you forget that one speaker is doing all the voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It would have been a good book for one sitting. I got it to listen to while traveling. Stopping and starting took nothing away from the enjoyment.

    Any additional comments?

Martinez describes his characters so the reader or listener visualizes what is going on. Toren's voices enhances the experience.

    "Cute, But Not Really Funny"

This is a cute story. I would classify it as Young Adult. The narrator is ok, but her characterizations are a bit cartoonish, which doesn't help with the juvenile feel of the story. Might be more fun to read than to listen to. Not Martinez's best work.

its hard for me to find a good story i like and got lucky with this one.
try the simple and see if that will help you any.
as for the Narrater i think Suzanne Toren did fine on this kind of story.
everyone has there own likes and dislikes.
i always read the reviews and then the simple to try and get a good ideal what its like.

    "painful listen"

I'm listening to this book right now and am having a hard time evaluating it because the narration is sooo bad. The narrator cannot do characters at all. Except for Nessy, the character voices include one really bad Scottish (I think) accent, and a bunch of typical ghost-like sounding supports. By attempting to make everyone sound supernatural, she throws off the rthym of their speech and irritates the hell out of me. Too bad, it might even be a good book otherwise.

    "Probably Adorable"

It seems very cute, likable characters, seems like a good story, but it has more of a older juvenile/young adult feel to it than I was looking for. I plan on handing it off to my daughter. I bet she will like it more than I did.
