Audible Editor Reviews

"Now that was some serious, bleeping fun. For a few hours - amidst the sounds of morphing extraterrestrials, ignited flamethrowers, and the sonic tremble of spaceships overhead - it felt like I had stolen away into the world of The X-Files and been treated to my very own mini-season. Of course, listening to Duchovny and Anderson verbally spar as the iconic pairing of Mulder and Scully is an X-Philes' delight. But, for me, hearing the liquid honey - though sinister - croon of William B. Davis' Cigarette Smoking Man AND the giddy shenanigans of the original Lone Gunmen was worth the price of admission alone. Add to that top-notch sound design and a story that doses out 'Monster of the Week' thrills and 'mytharc' reveals (canonical arguments be damned, this was just too fun), and you have yourself one can't-miss listen for fans." -Doug, Audible Editor

Publisher's Summary

The series that had a generation looking to the sky gets a breathtaking audio reprise in an original full-cast dramatization featuring actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to voice FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Based upon the graphic novels by Joe Harris - with creative direction from series creator Chris Carter - and adapted specifically for the audio format by aural auteur Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Alien: Out of the Shadows), and directed by William Dufris of AudioComics, Cold Cases marks yet another thrilling addition to the pantheon of X-Files stories. Featuring a mind-blowing and otherworldly soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft, listeners get to experience the duo's investigations like never before.

Set after the events of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and providing additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016's miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved - dubbed cold cases - by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.

Here, fans are treated once again to Mulder and Scully's irreplicable chemistry as only the series' leads could deliver, Duchovny's deadpan and cynical aloofness finding its natural counterpoint in Anderson's unwavering intelligence and rigidity. Appearances from series regulars and the actors who made them fan favorites round out this must-listen arc: the gruff, no-BS righteousness of Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi); the distinctive click-puff of the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis); and the stooge-like hijinks of three beloved conspiracy theorists called the Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood).

Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, find your "I Want to Believe" poster. Break out that makeshift alien stiletto. Grab a pack of Morley cigarettes.

The truth is out there. You just have to listen.

"Not bad, but needs some tweaking"

Story was good, albeit it gets mildly irritating for references to past tv stories to be dropped in so often. I get why it's done for people new to x-files but it needs to be reigned in a bit.
I thought William Davis and the Lone Gunman made the transition to audio well, but both the leads just sound bored all the time - almost as if they're just reading the lines instead of acting.

    "Mixed reaction"

A little bit too procedural for this stage in the life of the x files. I was missing any character development and interaction between Mulder and Scully.

It's a good attempt to tie up the story and the mythology to date and I wonder whether this will lead into series 11.

Generally I liked the performances - obviously feels different when it's just audiobook but I still think we could have had more interesting interaction between our two heros to reference where we find them at this stage of their lives.

"One for the proper fans I reckon."

So I remember watching the x-files from when I was 11/12 for 4/5 seasons with my dad. I lost touch with it but have fond memories.

So this pops up on Audible and I figure I'd give it a go as I've been loving the audible originals of late.

The theme music starts the cast voices are totally recognisable so I settle in for what i hope to be a good audiobook.

The first episode ends...meh! Same goes for the second and third and so on. It might just be me but the writing is terrible, things just seem to happen..just because! The episodes go nowhere, they lack tension and overall I found it to be totally boring. I listened to it in one sitting and it was a real struggle.

I'm not suggesting you might not love it but for me any maybe for you, keep that x-files nostalgia as it is.

The cast performances were great but it wasn't enough to save this for me.

"Shame about the overly descriptive narration style"

Enjoyed listening. Was entertained. Great to hear original cast. But narration devices to tell story were poor. Relied too heavily on cast blurting out exactly what they saw to set picture, rather then clever use of sound effects and better script writing to give cast a more realistic reason for explaining surroundings. Treated audience like dummys at times. Needed to trust them more that they'd figure out what ws going on. Apart from that it was a lot of fun. And I was never bored. X-Files fans will enjoy it.

    "Brilliant X-File!"

Not the standard audio book. Performed like a radio play, you are completely swept up in the story. This book includes conspiracy and aliens and even the old favorite monster of the week. The chapters are episodes and there are several during the 4hr time frame . I would recommend this to every X-Files fan, and anyone who loves a well told story!

    "need more of this.."

I've been a big fan of X-Files since I was a kid and this brings back all kinds of feelings for me to hear the originl casts' voice. It's like I'm watching the series in my mind. The story is great as you can expect. The soundeffects and bgm were awesome. I actually binge listened to this audible today and torn between wanting to know the end of the story and don't want to finish it so quickly. It's too short. I hope they will do more of this.

I spent my beach day today excitedly listening to this. Despite some continuity errors (Scully doesn't understand German?), the tales were enjoyable and satisfied my need for a new X-Files fix!

"Only 4 hours is not Enough!"
Would you consider the audio edition of The X-Files: Cold Cases to be better than the print version?

yes, I think so! what can be better than original cast read this tome than myself trying to imagine while I read the book. it is like I got in the story with the characters!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mulder! I have such a crush on him.. ha ha!

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

do you have to ask? Mulder of course!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

both actually! I was so excited to finally listen to it that I had to do my happy dance! :)

"This is amazing. Plz more with the Original Cast!!"
If you could sum up The X-Files: Cold Cases in three words, what would they be?

    Excellent. Awesome. Wonderful.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Mulder and Scully, of course.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. This is my first time.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I laughed and wanted to cry. I was so happy to hear David and Gillian as Mulder and Scully. To hear the Lone Gunmen and Skinner.

    Any additional comments?

My only criticism is not for this but for CC. William is Mulder's son, CC. Come on. Anyway, other than that. This was excellent. Excellent.
