Summary

The impossible has happened. The Lord Ruler is dead. But so too is Kelsier, the man who masterminded the triumph. The awesome task of rebuilding the world has been left to his protege Vin - a onetime street urchin, now the most powerful Mistborn in the land. Worryingly for her, Vin has become the focus of a new religion, a development that leaves her intensely uneasy. More worryingly still, the mists have become unpredictable since the Lord Ruler died, and a strange vaprous entity is stalking Vin. As the siege of Luthadel intensifies, the ancient legend of the Well of Ascension offers the only glimmer of hope. But no-one knows where it is or what it can do....

Second book and still gripping me

OK. Firstly, this is not a sequel and thus isn't simply a rehash of the first concept, this is the next installment.
If you listened to the first book and enjoyed it, then you'll enjoy this.
This installment adds depth to characters and adds more detail to the backstory of the world; introducing whole new species and new magic into the world created in the first book, as well as adding insight into the magic already introduced in the first book . This is a worthy listen, although I would imagine that starting on this book would leave the listener baffled as it requires the background and gentle introduction provided in the first book otherwise you will feel cheated.
Overall, a great listen.
Thank you once again Mr Sanderson.

Blimey - it's longer than the first one!

Over 27 hours long!

The Mistborn series is a cruel mistress. If you've spent 24 hours on the first book, you'll be damned if you'll spend 27 hours on the second.

But I did. I had too.

Having spend so long with the characters during the first part of the epic, I had to see what happened next so I we go again with Michael Kramer manning the wheel once again.

The story has the same feel to it as the first but our heroes and villains are in a very different scenario.

The political under-current of the first novel becomes more important during this one and sometimes it can feel as if this is a little heavy going.

However, our hero Vin is following a different path and keeps the story flying along as she battles an array of interesting new characters.

There is a complimentary magic system to the first which adds another level of detail to Sanderson's story.

There are some brilliant turns and surprises and if you have listened to the first one then you must listen to this.

Understandably - don't start with this one - listen to book 1.

Awesome

This is an amazing book. I loved the first book in the series, and I was a bit concerned by some of the reviews I'd read about the second book, but I needn't have worried.

This second book was more 'political' and 'scholarly' than the first book, with less emphasis on allomancy than the first one, but it was just as gripping and exciting, while giving us more insight into the characters and the nature of the landscape of the Final Empire.

Michael Kramer reads the books wonderfully and is totally captivating.

I also love the fact that it's child friendly, and hasn't turned into soft porn like some other sequels I've read recently... While it's not aimed at younger children, you could listen to it with them around without worrying. It's a great book for teens and adults.

Essential Filler

I really enjoyed the first book and loving the third book. Although I enjoyed this book, its probably the worst of the three. The pace is quite slow and you sense that there was a long period of time between the writing of the first and second books. I read book two directly after book one, and for that reason the first half was a constant recap of what happened in the first book as if the author himself was reacquainting himself with the characters. It can get tiresome having allomancy explained again and again.

That said, it really builds on the characters and sets the scene for the third book, where the transition is a lot smoother and quick. Overall, I enjoyed it but i think I would have preferred to read another book or two between the original and sequel so that the recap didn't annoy so much and was more valued.

Where have you gone to 'Well of ascension' ?

I was really enjoying this story (on my iphone audible app) only to find it wouldn't play beyond part 2 chapter 6. I'm very frustrated especially because my library doesn't have the book and I'm desperate to find out what happens next...

I hope the bug gets fixed really soon.

Tinny Audio on chapters

Certain chapters had a metallic echo on the track which made it difficult to listen through ear phones.

Sanderson and kramer have done it again.

Michael Kramer is in my opinion, the best audible voice actor out there. Listened to a bunch of books read by him and his acting and voice have enhanced my enjoyment of each one so much. So far every book narrated by him has been deserving of a 5/5, and I don't expect to ever give him less.

Sanderson's books and writings are extremely similar. He has definitely become the writer I compare every other book I pick up to, seeing if they can fill his shoes. So no surprise the book also gets a 5. I'd say it wasn't as strong as the first book as there was no character like kelsier. It's hard to explain, but the second book just feels like there is a gap missing where a character like kelsier should fit into. Presumable Sanderson intended the reader to feel like this throughout, to help the reader sympathise with the characters when Kelsier is mentioned. If this is done on purpose, he has done a bloody marvellous job. Although the gap wasn't filled in the end like I feel it should have been, rather than waiting until the next book to have it filled.

Excellent

Would you consider the audio edition of The Well of Ascension to be better than the print version?

I wrote a review of the first book in the series and this is the same - excellent audiobook with very good narrator. Thoroughly enjoyed all three books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

All characters well developed.

What does Michael Kramer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Just love being read to and this narration was very easy on the ear. I know some people don't like Michael's American accent but he has a wonderful timbre to his voice that I appreciate and he changes his voice for all the characters so it is easy to identify characters - very well done in my opinion.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

No idea for a tag line but would definitely see the movie!!

Any additional comments?

Thoroughly enjoyed this series of books.

Great culmination of an excellent series.

Up until a couple of months ago I had never heard of this author.

I took a chance on one of the audiobooks and got completely hooked.

He writes incredibly well and introduces new worlds with revolutionary and intricate schemes of magic that transport the listener completely transported.

His books have the advantage of being very long so with an audible membership you get 25 plus hours of riveting listening for the same price as most books that arw only 10 hours.

I love this guy.
