Summary

First came the days of the plague. Then came the dreams. Dark dreams that warned of the coming of the dark man. The apostate of death, his worn-down boot heels tramping the night roads. The warlord of the charnel house and Prince of Evil. His time is at hand. His empire grows in the west and the Apocalypse looms.

For hundreds of thousands of fans who read The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King's gift. And those who are listening to The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival.

Great book but you may need a break mid way through

I chose to listen to this book as it is widely considered the best Stephen king novel ever. I also chose to listen to it as it would be far too long for me to read myself. The story is incredibly detailed which is both its strength and weakness. Sometimes you want to get lost in the detail and sometimes you wonder why it is going on so long - I suppose it depends on your mood. An example would be one time I was walking my dog on a 45 minute walk and for the entire 45 minute period the book covered the thoughts of one character who was lying in bed thinking. I enjoyed it personally but I accept some people may wonder why there needs to be that much detail. I found mother Abigail an irritating character mainly because of the frequent reference to god and around the time she entered the story I did lose interest. I took a break from the book for about 4 months and when I returned to it I was pleased I did and the irritation had gone away. I really enjoyed the parts when I returned to listening and feel that the break I took was very beneficial. I was still able to remember the characters and their back story so it was easy to slip back in. If you intend to listen to this entire book in one go without any breaks (not literally in one go just over a period of time without a break) you may find it long winded and hard. But in terms of a book to listen to in bits whether that be whilst walking the dog or driving to work it was fantastic

Quite good but too long

This is supposed to be many readers' favourite Stephen King story. it was alright but just went on too long. There is an element of Stephen King's supernatural style but I prefer many of his other books.

King's best ever.

The classic story of good and evil brought to life as only Stephen King can do. The scenario is eerily probable let's hope it never happens.

Loved it!

Excellent, very long but enjoyable. Well narrated, with distinct character voices. One of Stephen King's finest works.

King's take on the post-apocalypse is masterful.

Good and evil go head to head in this mammoth post-apocalyptic saga by the King of Horror.

💜There are absolutely zero shades of grey in this epic battle of good versus evil. Good is righteous. Evil is monstrous. But that doesn't mean it is two dimensional. It means extreme and dramatic. When you root for the heroes, it is without any reservations. Actually, I'm being quite judgy, aren't I. Feel free to root for whoever you like.

💜It's worth highlighting that, at almost two full days in length this book is plenty of entertainment bang for one Audible credit buck.

PS. The TV series was excellent and very true to the book.

SOUNDBITE

🎧I hope that this, like The Handmaid's Tale, is re-recorded with a big cast. Current narrator, Grover Gardner has a myriad of awards to his name and does an excellent job of differentiating characters. I would say that his voice is distinctive, with the angular quality of a 1950's detective that does suit many of the characters. However 48 hours is a long time to listen to the same voice, especially when it is portraying such a variety of characters.

Gardner steps up to the mantle and delivers a fully immersive journey

A long story but you’re well rewarded for your commitment.

Hard to believe it is just one person narrating the story. Makes you want to wish Gardner was there for every story you’ve ever heard and read!

sweat, blood, tears and thought provoking!

great story that kept me griped from the beginning, and it's a long listen. I'm not usually one for stories with religion as a prominent theme, but it was very tastefully done. I didn't feel preached at at all.

the narrator has done a wonderful job, his voice suits the story and the characters perfectly.

all in all a very entertaining listen!
