Summary

Danny is only five years old, but in the words of old Mr Hallorann he is a 'shiner', aglow with psychic voltage. When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Danny's visions grow out of control. As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own. It is meant to be empty. So who is the lady in Room 217, and who are the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive? Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel - and that, too, is beginning to shine….

Great story and well performed

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book. Even though I had read it a number of times, I hadn't realised how drawn out the story was and it's made me think carefully before trying another Stephen King. The performance was good and although I wasn't riveted, I was happy to listen to it.

Simply a masterpiece

For years I put off reading then book as I love the film and was aware of how different they are. Yes they are different in some ways and yet still so similar in others. Where the film is is a game changer for horror movies, so is the novel for horror fiction. It’s easy to see why this really kick started Stephen Kings career. It’s an amazing character driven story set against the most terrifying backdrop (the overlook) and you really feel Jacks descent into madness and almost feel like you’re going down with him. I can’t recommend enough.

Ps: Don’t be deterred by the mini series that was “more faithful” to this novel. This is a lot more exciting.

captivating and terrifying

The story sends chills up your spine. Read so effortlessly that it still transported me to the Overlook hotel just as it would if I had turned the pages myself.

love this story!

found the narrator a little tiresome to begin with, but as the story gets more meaty, his performance picked up in my opinion.

Nightmares at the overlook hotel.

What made the experience of listening to The Shining the most enjoyable?

This was a reread for me. So revisiting a story I loved so much the first time was nice. Plus some genuinely good scares. Kingy at his best.

What did you like best about this story?

A good setting. Lots of tension and suspense. The paranormal aspects work well.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Room 217

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Tried. Got close. But a few breaks.

Any additional comments?

One of kings best works. A gothic masterpiece.

Way better than the movie!

Good narration and fantastic story. Really impressed by the story, having only ever seen the movie. It's so much richer as a book and the characters have so much more depth. Highly recommend.

Amazing book living up to all expectations!

Wonderful narration! I wanted to read the book after seeing the film a long time ago, and it lived up to all expectations. So much more backstory and perspective from Danny (the son) which didn't make it into the film.
A very effective spooky atmosphere, which had me hooked throughout.
