It begins in the early 1900s when archaeologist Lawrence Stratford discovers a perfectly preserved mummy in a tomb in Cairo. Little does he know that the mummy, one Ramses the Great, a.k.a. Ramses the Damned, has consumed an extraordinary potion that makes him immortal; only the powerful rays of the sun are needed to bring him to life. Transported to London, the mummy dispenses with his wrap and takes on a human guise. As Reginald Ramsey, he immediately captures the heart of Stratford's daughter, Julie, who is privy to his unnatural secret but can't resist his stunning good looks. All goes well until Reginald comes across Cleopatra, his long-lost love, under glass in a museum. Unable to bear the sight of this once-glorious Queen now on gruesome display, he decides to bring her back to life...a decision he will live - forever - to regret.
The ancient world collides with the modern one in Anne Rice's richly erotic yet sentimental love story that resonates with the macabre.

"Not good at all"
This was my favorite book, I've had at least 3 paperback copies that I have worn out! I was very excited to have it on my phone, at my fingertips.... then it wouldn't download, I re-downloaded it several times, even going so far as to delete the app and re-install and it wouldn't work. Finally customer service was able to get it to play.... and what a disappointment. It was the 'abridged' version (unabriged not available) and it bounced around and cut out so much that the story didn't make any sense- AND I KNOW THE STORY! I feel bad for anyone who downloads this book and doesn't know the 'true' Anne Rice book. Don't waste your credits on this one like I did.
"So disappointing if you've read it in full print."
I honestly don't know anyone who would prefer this version of a classic story.
I love Anne Rice, but I have learned my lesson and will not be purchasing abridged versions, nor those narrated by Michael York in the future.
Lose the music, lose the narrator (the narrator of the Vampire series would've been a better choice), and look more closely at how the editing and cutting of the original story affects how the final version feels. This felt too choppy, too much cut out that really did not allow you to connect with the story as fully as you'd want. And the narration felt more like the narrator was reading a children's bedtime story. It was nearly painful to listen to, and if I had another book ready on my queue while at work I would've played it instead.
Not the way it was performed and cut. No.
I was so very much looking forward to listening to this book, I've read and reread it in print for years and years and was looking forward to having the characters "come to life", instead I feel as if someone were reading me a poorly written fan fiction version of one of my favorite stories.
"Mr York - GREAT - The script - BAD"
I have previously read this as a book and bought this version to listen to on a long drive. I have to say, this was disappointing. The first part of the recording was reasonable in regards to the book, but the last part of the recording strayed so far from the book that the entire meaning was lost for the most part.
Michael York is FANTASTIC as a reader and his voice is capable of changing to match the characters he is speaking for. He is the only real plus for this recording.
"Felt left hanging on a cliff"
Loved this book, read it twice them listened to it. God bless Anne Rice, is there closure that I'm not aware of in another book?!
"Abridged is bad"
I own a hard copy of this book and the Abridged version does it no justice. The narrator was just okay but the editing was awful. I recommend buying the actual book, this audible is bad.
"The Mummy "
loved it and will listen to it again narrative very well love Anne RIce books
The story was pretty predictable, so not much edge of your seat, if you're into that kind of thing. I would have given a better performance review, but the music that was added was OVER THE TOP! It was hard to hear the dialogue because of the music. I don't know why they insist on adding the background sounds, especially on top of dialogue. If the narrator is good, you don't need the sound effects. Anyway, if you can get it on sale, it's fun, but I don't know that it's worth full price.
"Lovely early work"
Anne Rice will always remain one of my favorite writers. I love how her work has been so fluid through the years as her mentality has changed. This is one story i wish had more depth. I hope she returns to build upon these characters someday.
"loved Lestat and wish this one had sequel"
good book, enjoyed reading performance. Read in book form years ago, still as good as I remembered.
Great read, the characters are so alive, so vivid that u wish u were there only invisible so u could observe events as they happened without anyone one knowing except u,and let's not forget our narrator MR. MICHEAL YORK who captured the characters to the hilt, great job my hat off to u sir. I read this book when it first hit the shelves and after all this time I still find it as enthralling as I previously did yrs ago. I really hope that now it is on AUDIO BOOKS MS. RICE will see herself writing a sequel after all these years since her hiatus. It would be well received I am quiet sure of that, and besides it left so many unaswered questions. So yes we Fans are deligently awaiting a sequel even if is to end the book...I really hope u are able to get a chance to read my thoughts on your books, and thank u AUDIO BOOKS FOR great service and opening a new way to listen to great books of vast genre's.
