Summary

The Western Front, 1916. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong, and the wind in the leaves in the trees. Where have the mud, blood, and blasted landscape of No Man's Land gone?

Madison, Wisconsin, 2015. Cop Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive - some said mad, others dangerous - scientist when she finds a curious gadget: a box containing some wiring, a three-way switch and a potato. It is the prototype of an invention that will change the way Mankind views his world forever. And that's an understatement if ever there was one....

The Long Earth is the first novel in an exciting new collaboration between the creator of Discworld, Terry Pratchett, and the acclaimed SF writer Stephen Baxter.

A whole new Disc World

I was impressed with the idea of a new world (s) available with just a sideways step thoroughly enjoyed and moving on to the next in the series ... a different approach to an old idea well executed ...

Thought provoking Sci-Fi excellence

It has everything everything that make Sci-fi great; especially a mirror on human nature.

The most thoughtful SF in generations

if you are a fan of Diskworld, you might not enjoy this, if you're a fan of Terry Pratchet then I think you'll love it. Where DW is about individuals and how the bend the world around them TLE is about everything else. you can hear Terry and Stephens thoughts on the relationship between science and faith, on the implications of consciousness, on evolution.

if you're here for a funny adventure, come back later, if you're here for thoughtful, somewhat cosy speculation, then you really might enjoy.

Wow

For an author that we're so familiar with to come up with something so utterly fresh, complete and compelling is rather spine tingling.

Superbly executed Sci-Fi with the classic Pratchett integrity of story driving our characters and our interest.

Excellent job by Michael Fenton Stevens who brings a wealth of characters off the page.

Please be warned, this is the first part of a series and does not resolve the plot-lines at the end of the book.

Amazing story

It's second time I am listening to this audio book and it still sounds great. Such an interesting idea of multiverse and very loveable main characters.

Interesting, but a bit rambling

Story has an interesting premise but at times does feel a bit slow. Narrator generally good at different voices, but the main make characters have such stilted voices, that it feels like interesting events are just banal.
Will still be reading the next one though as I need to know what happens next!

Good (If you fancy it)

I was hooked from the start, but I don't think it's for everyone. It has a plodding, inquisitive, and exploratory pace, good for sci-fi fans, but its probably not the best entry to the genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it though, gobbled it over a weekend and came back for seconds. Thoroughly recommended.

A long what if..

I found it really interesting, but it's not a conventional book as it is not of a "what if" full with stories about how people handle the ability to step into other worlds.
If you ever become annoyed when read a book and wonder "this is so cool, but what about the rest of the world!? How are they handling it? Why can't I see how the global population is doing?"

This book covers those questions!
