"Planner is confronted by a variety of eccentric characters and with brilliant flair he brings them off well. Great stuff." (AudioFile)
While the Light Fanastic isn't the best of the Discworld novels it's certainly more humorous than the previous title 'the Colour of Magic', you can see the start of the writing style that made Pratchett's series so well loved.
The storyline continues directly from the end of the Colour of Magic and serves as a much more epic storyline than the previous novels now Rincewind and Twoflower are established, as well as introducing future Discworld star Cohen as well as the Wizards. It involves the miraculous saving of Rincewind and Twoflower and the threat of a Red star heading towards the Discworld.
There are a few places where the narrative feels a bit long winded in the middle but overall it is a well paced book that in conjunction with the previous novel form an excellent story.
I'd recommend it, if best served back to back with 'The Colour of Magic'
Two stars because the audio quality of this, even on 4 and enhanced, dreadful. There's a background hiss and it sounds tinny. I wish I'd sampled it first. Get the abridged version -- it's shorter, obviously, but the sound quality is much better and it costs less.
Dear Terry Pratchett. One of the sorrows of my life is that I wasted a lot of years, thinking I didn't need to read about Discworld. A mistake I have repeated, several times elsewhere. Still, looking on the bright side, they're all still there, waiting to be enjoyed.
I was a bit puzzled by this, because, my introduction to Discworld came via the film made of 'The Colour of Magic', which I enjoyed, enormously. When I got to The Light Fantastic, I suddenly realised that the film contained a lot of this book too, which, I have to say, was a bit of a disappointment. Add the alterations, and adjustments made with any film, and it all becomes a bit overdone. I loved it, and the characters, and have plotted out the rest of the list. Long Live Sir Terry.
Terry Prachetts style is so cleverly descriptive and greatly amusing and this book is no exception. Brilliantly read by Nigel Planer who has just the perfect voice for a Prachett novel. Well worth every penny, I highly recommend it and guarantee you will not be dissapointed.
nerd, programmer, love sailing and the ocean in general. Enjoy the pursuit of intellect.
I prefer the first book, maybe just because it was first. :P
More of the same amazing story, with our two favourite characters. Keep you entertained and easy to listen to. Wonderful, I recommend listen to the first book before this one!
The recording is pretty bad, not as bad as book 3, but still pretty bad. It does seem to get better as you go along, one might be getting used to it. There are some questionable "sound effects" as well...
But all in all, the brilliant story trumps the poor quality. Definitely worth a listen and the time. :)
I've fallen for Terry Pratchett HARD!
There is something so compelling about the disc world moving through the Multiverse on the back of Great A'Tuin. Pratchett's irreverent language and viewpoint keeps you captivated and may lead to unseemly chuckles on the bus. (Not really encouraged on British Transport)
The thing is, I 'm sure I've actually met Twoflower, the tourist who is most disappointed when things in real life don't behave the way they do in his books, and Rincewind, the wizard with an eminently sensible sense of self preservation, who nonetheless always runs into danger.
I listen to a lot of audio books as well as reading a lot of books online. I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and children.
I have read ,most of the books in the discworld series although I have only just started collecting them as e-books.
As a stand alone book it is funny, engaging and easy to pick up listening where you left off.
Terry Pratchett is a genius and I would highly recommend both this book as well as the rest of the discworld series.
My favourite character has to be Rincewind, D'eath is a very close second in this series though
this was the last one in the set...but not prepared to listen to it, why have the usual team allowed some jerk to put bells between each section?
switched off my bedtime story and went back to another Pratchett
Take off the stupid bells! Bad enough that some of the others have an audible racket between teh download sections, but that means two or three in an entire book. This was every few minutes!
Have two in order to complete Colour of Magic this is the second book in that story seems a bit unfair to the reader/listener to have to buy two very short books to get only one story. But a very good story it is!
Nearly every Discworld novel at least the later ones came out in a single book nicer way to listen and doesn't cost you the price of two books.
Very well read indeed Nigel has that right level of funny inflection to give the characters life
Yes but can never sit still that long
I am just getting into the Discworld series and was looking forward to this book. The story met my expectations but the quality of the audio was pretty awful. There is a weird, jarring sound effect and it sounds as though it's been copied from someone's ancient tape. The story deserves better!
"Rincewind is back with a vengeance"
The Story that began with the first Discworld novel, the Colour of Magic has its epilogue in the second one, the Light Fantastic. Download them both, listen to them one after the other. The cover image is mistaken again, like in the colour of magic, and low resolution too. this is why they get 4 stars and not 5. Reader, Nigel IS THE READER, the one and only, perfect! He embodies the spirit od the Disc characters that Pratchett created, never boring and always perfect being Death, Rincewind or even the Luggage or any othe character! Pratchett himself confirms yet again that you can have an Epic fantasy ...even with onions!
