Summary

The Hobbit is the unforgettable story of Bilbo Baggins and acts as a prequel to the mythical Lord of the Rings fantasy series. Showcasing J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative prowess, this a beautiful, otherworldly tale that cements the author's status as one of the premier storytellers of the twentieth century.

The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon....

The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the 20th century.

Fabulous!

Loved it!
Really enjoyed the narration, it is read with feeling and you can imagine being in Middle Earth.
Great pace to the story and I personally think the different characters were voiced fantastically!
I know the songs put some people off, but I enjoyed them immensely.
A true reading of The Hobbit.
Highly Recommended.

Definitive

Yes absolutely, everybody has their own personal Bees in their Bonnet when it comes to the narration approach, and also now the dear Rob Inglis has the Neophyte Andy Serkis to contend with.
But taken as a whole, this is a exemplary reading, if you're not happy with it, then buy yourself an expensive Shure Microphone and a sound booth and do your own bleeding version!!

There is a subtle humorous approach to this reading, and an obvious familiarity with the text being read.

It takes a bit of getting used to this bloke reading it, but once you get into the meat of the book, Rob Inglis's narration is genius.

It is anecdotally said that this gentleman was a friend of J. R. R Tolkien, (I cannot confirm this) so I would imagine that this recording of The Hobbit Narrated, met with Tolkien's approval & will (as I titled this review) remain DEFINITIVE for a considerable while yet.

Loved it.

The book itself doesn't need explaining. Together, with The Lord of the Ring an absolutely brilliant set of stories. Rob Inglis reads them all so well too.

A reasonably enjoyable listen

Prior to listening to this story I’d watched the films. I don’t think I’d have stuck with the book if I hadn’t seen the films, as I found some of the story (including the weird singing and Gollum voices) rather irritating. However, it’s a great story if you aren’t as easily tormented by such things. I felt the narrator was quite average, which might not have helped matters.
