Summary

The Hobbit is the unforgettable story of Bilbo Baggins and acts as a prequel to the mythical Lord of the Rings fantasy series. Showcasing J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative prowess, this a beautiful, otherworldly tale that cements the author's status as one of the premier storytellers of the twentieth century.

The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon....

The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the 20th century.

EXCELLENT, but get rid of that music!!!

Any additional comments?

This (and the other Tolkien audiobooks) are all performed wonderfully, but they're blighted by pseudo-medieval musical snippets at the beginning and end, that overlay the spoken word so you struggle to hear the words. This is probably deliberate by the publisher, to stop people copying the narration, but it's annoying nonetheless.

If you haven't already read this book. ..Then you should definitely put it on your NEED TO READ LIST !!, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien is one of the books you MUST read in your lifetime !!, a 'Bucket List' book if Ever there was one !!

The reader brings life to them all

The reader's voice is perfect for the job, he brings to life the wizard, the hobbit and all the goblins, dwarves, elves, eagles, spiders and the now famous (Precious) Golum. The adventures Bilbo Baggins finds himself in are as enthralling now as ever. It is interesting to me that there are no females in this tale and only one vague mention of one, don't know what that signifies but it does not detract from this exciting and charming story.

The Genius Of Tolkien

I've owned the printed version of this book for a number of years now, and from the moment I started reading it, I realised why it was called a classic.

The 'Lord of the Rings' movies, only offer a mere hint of the legend that is Bilbo Baggins. The only way to fully appreciate this story, is to experience it through the book.

I'm hoping now that 'The Hobbit' movie will reveal the intricacies of the story, and offer a real look into, as the review title says, 'The Genius Of Tolkien'.
