Publisher's Summary

A sinister darkness has finally cast its long shadow across the world, and Adrian Ring now suspects he's at the center of the maelstrom. And he's not alone. Even overseas, his friend Kevin is somehow standing at his side.

At Auburn Lake, Adrian and his adopted family finally understand that the dreams they have suffered since the end of the world are far more than restless imaginings. When a thousand mindless dead arrive holding books, can it be anything but a message from beyond the grave? Soon they will learn that what the dead say can be far worse than what the dead have done.

In The Failed Coward, the fourth installment in the epic Adrian's Undead Diary series, Adrian realizes the scope of humanity's struggle, and just what's at stake. Despite all the dangers posed by the world around him, Adrian pushes out more aggressively, reclaiming more and more territory from the clutches of the treasonous survivors and the walking dead.

Adrian's world is also expanded with more short stories. New questions are raised, and new characters introduced. And they will need all the help they can get to stay alive.

In the end, everyone may need Adrian's help.

    "Transitional Book, has to happen"

This is a review of the fourth book in a series, please check out the first three before reading this. As it could contain spoilers for those books.

For three books I have raved about how much I love this series. It is the depth to the characters, particularly Adrian, that makes it such a wonderful story. Typically I want zombie gore and more actions scenes than you can shake a stick at. This is not what you get from Philbrook in Adrian’s Undead Diary. What you get is a heart wrenching, tense and adrenaline pumping chronicle of how one band of survivors eek out their day to day lives that just happens to involve zombies wandering about.

The Failed Coward seemed to suffer from what often happens in a series, you know the transitional book that has to written and read. Pretty much all character development. But if it were up to me, I might have skipped this fourth book and jump to the fifth.

With the way the third book ended I expected a long drawn out defense of the school right of the bat. This was cut short with very little drama. Then right in to continuing to build their surplus of supplies.

The best part, again it seemed to have been cut short and I hope it is revisited, was Adrian’s feeling of failure to protect the ones that he loved the most, when he found his military buddy. Adrian is clearly damaged goods and I await the moment where this takes center stage.

Even though this book was not the best in the series, I will not let it sway me from continuing on with the rest of the books. I am all in a this point and I need to know how this series will wrap up as I am sure bad thing are to come for out lovable survivors.

I cannot think of anything new to say about James Foster’s performance. He has been able to keep the exact same tone and feeling to every single audiobook so far. If your main enjoyment from audiobooks come from a solid, unwavering performance, than he is a great go to narrator to choose from.

"The series which gets better and better!"

Some of the zombie series books start of great and slowly fall away to become average. But not this one! Each book in the series builds the story and the character development. Each one improves on the one before!

I couldn’t stop myself from listening to this one in one go. However, my wife had other orders for me so it took me two days. I hate it when real life gets in the way of my make believe world!

The balance between the tension and humour is brilliant. The way the story comes together with each unique character kept me wanting to know more.

This book more than just fills in the long hours of a boring commute, it has the ability to suck you in for a whole day and cause you to actually achieve nothing during your working hours. Not that it did for me (just in case my boss reads this review)

The narration is once again great, allowing the story to be played at 1.25x speed without any problems.

My only let down with this title is the end. I won't give anything away. But after the climax of the ending of the previous one I was expecting something truly epic!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, as long as they are a fan of the genre and they have read or listened to the first 3 books

    Which scene was your favorite?

Adrian's injury and Abby's taking over as the Scribe

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Both

    Any additional comments?

If you've gotten this far into the series, you already know it's a great story so I don't really need to try and sell you on it. Great writing and narrating - it's just a fun series, waiting to see what Adrian does next.

This is a transitional book in the series and it also sets up the rest of the books in the series. It might not be the best in the series, but it was still very good and I can't wait to start book 5!

    "Still Hooked"

This is the fourth book in the Adrian's Undead Diary series. You will need to have read the others to enjoy this one. As soon as I finish one book, I immediately want to pick up the next. It is so good. This book has the journal format of the other books as well as vignettes like those featured in the last book. I was initially wary of the journal format, but Philbrook handles this format nicely. This book still has action and survival, but as the series progresses, each book really settles into character and story development. These are not just gory zombie fare.

I have listened to this entire series (more than once). I have loved every book. The story line is great. Each book has small daily plots as well as an overarching plot making each book a complex mixture of ideas and emotions. The character development is fantastic. It is the apocalypse story that has a little something for everyone. Gun porn - check. Tactical discussion - check. Actual daily survival - check. Emotional and personal interactions - check. Zombie killing - check. Funny stuff - check. NotTooOverTheTop spiritual elements - check. you get the idea.

This book and the rest of the series is all good stuff. Seriously.

    The narrator is great. Perfect.

    "Great story"
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Failed Coward?

This book is one of my favorites in this series. So many things happen and Adrian and the other characters really grow into something bigger and better than what they were at the start of the series.

What does James Foster bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

James, really brings the whole AUD universe to life. He has become one of my favorite readers.

"A Series that Gets You Hooked"

I started with book one and had a lil bit of a challenge with the style both of the journal type narrative and the narrators voice in comparison to the main character's build and background. By book two there's a rhythm and there's more focus on the side stories written in third person which are fascinating. Now by this book I am hooked! The ending seems a little abrupt and I think I could have had more but I guess that's what the next story is for :)

"Short stores are what this author excels at"

I think the short stores that Chris interlaces or weaves into the story are simply amazing. Adrian's story on the other hand seems less realistic and almost laid back and too casual for what is going on around him ... Aka the collapse of civilization and the walking dead roaming the earth. However, all this aside ... Chris, the author is clearly very talented and shines in this genera and I hope he continues to write all things zombie. His short story book "Unhappy Endings" was stellar & amazing and clearly displays the authors talent for painting a raw world with intriguing characters and gut wrenching terror.

I hope the author writes a few more collections like Unhappy Endings, and when he takes on another series... I really hope he can inject that same vividness of his short stores into the realm that his main character resides in.
