Two weeks have passed since the lights went out and in that time, Nicholas McNeil has assembled the equipment, a team of devoted survivors and has located a safe place to go hunker down. The catch is that it's over a thousand miles away. He is ready for a tough journey but as the miles grow longer he discovers he's not quite as prepared for what mankind is capable of until he's face to face with it. He discovers the once picturesque landscape has been replaced with brutality and barbarism. Can the defiant few make it and if they do, will they only find more of the same there?

the story is good but is not original as is clearly copied from the hopf series. each character the same but with a different name. unlike the first book this one adds a few new ideas but at the end is the big reminder as it ends the same as hope's book. I'm not excited to read the 3rd book as it is completely predictable. disappointed in this author who just copies others.
"Fun But Flawed"
First the good. Having enjoyed the first book I was looking forward to this sequel. This story has the same good pacing and blend of action and character development. The narrator is excellent. I have two negatives. As other reviewers have noted, this book is short-too short. Not enough bang for the buck. I quit on the "A. American" books for the same reason, diminishing return on investment. My second negative was the introduction by the author of a metaphysical element in one of the sub-plots. This struck me as jarringly incongruous with the rest of the narrative. As soon as I heard it I GROANED. And its not even original. Its basically an Indiana Jones rip-off. I will not buy the next installment whenever it becomes available. The combination of these two negatives is a deal-breaker.
"Good premise, until we had to copy National Treasu"
I am a fan of apocalyptic fiction, but c'mon why do we need to weave a mystical treasure hunt into this. The book was fine standing on it's own without the ancient artifact.
"Better than the first"
All I can say is WOW! The author knows how to write and has extensive knowledge about what it is he writes about. Each character came to life thanks to the narrator who did a superb job. Looking forward to volume 3,
Brynn by far and then Colin
The moment that moved me most was when Bridget ...spoiler alert killed herself
Apocalyptic books and this series is good, yet the mystical spear portion is a bit much
It is a great story definately worth listening to. The narrator is a little bland with hardly any emotion in his reading.
"Great book that does not follow the paths of most, which makes it that much better."
To anyone read my review of the first novel in this series I would like to say that I now understand the reason for the similarities to the New World series, and after finding out why I enjoy it that much more. When listening to most books in this genre I often find myself thinking that the main characters are portrayed as hero's who rarely get injured and almost never die, well in John W. Vance's novels this is not the case. He isn't afraid to stray from the normal path and even add certain elements I've never imagined in a survival series. This book and its predecessor are both well worth a buy, so what are you waiting for?
"If I'd wanted Fantasy,I'd have read Harry Potter"
(1) The book is not standalone, and ends mid-stream. So be prepared to buy all three+ books if you want to follow the story.(2) Mixing in the hocus-pocus of the "Magic Spear" nonsense, which of course will be found at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in Guthrie, OK in book three (or five, I don't know), is a huge disappointment. How about a magic ring that makes you turn invisible? Or maybe Luke can just use the Force. Everything other than that thread is at least reasonably realistic in an America vastly changed from an EMP (which is a REAL threat!).(3) Having the attack coming from a "Victor", a bad Russian trying to take over the world, is unnecessary to the rest of the story, making it read more than a bit James Bond-ish. And I don't care how rich you are, you're not going to be able to build a super-EMP and launch it from a cargo ship - that's the work of Governments, not super-rich diabolical geniuses
Eliminate the entire magic spear thread. Replace it with hordes of people driving up from southern Mexico and down from northern Canada, where the cars still work.
Mr. Morton's performance was truly outstanding, in fact I would rate this (along with the first book) as one of the best I've ever heard. There's always a very fine line in having a male voice actor reading the female or child parts, and he handles it very steadily. The foreign accents are OK, but the real brilliance comes in handling so many diverse parts without sounding ridiculously overdone.
Concern in the fact that America is wholly unprepared for such a nuclear EMP attack.
"Listen to APOCALYPTIC ADVENTURE!!"
Terrific series for anyone who loves apocalypse books. Personally I can't get enough and I am always looking for a new series. This series kept me intrigued. It has a very interesting twist to the story. The narrator does a Great job ! This is one of the requirements when I sample books to listen to because unfortunately that ruins it for me. He has specific voices for each character and smooth voice. This audiobook will not disappoint!
"Lost me with the magical elements"
Not preppers for sure
This story was short but coming into it...had great characters and potential with the exception of Michael's story but lost credibility with the magical element in Michael's story.
suggest rewrite of Michael's story and lengthen to 8 0r 9 hours and I would buy again. Too many great prepper stories available to endorse this book.
Great job...as always
Redevelop Michael's story...lengthen the story and rerelease
Mr. Vance...with your background...why did you take a magical path?
"Wish book were longer, Excellent"
I can't wait for the third book to be released. I like how the characters come together.
