Summary

Inquisitor Glokta, a crippled and bitter relic of the last war, former fencing champion turned torturer, is trapped in a twisted and broken body - not that he allows it to distract him from his daily routine of torturing smugglers.

Nobleman, dashing officer and would-be fencing champion Captain Jezal dan Luthar is living a life of ease by cheating his friends at cards. Vain and shallow, the biggest blot on his horizon is having to get out of bed in the morning to train with obsessive and boring old men. And Logen Ninefingers, an infamous warrior with a bloody past, is about to wake up with plans to settle a blood feud with Bethod, the new King of the Northmen, once and for all - ideally by running away from it.

But as he's discovering, old habits die hard....especially when Bayaz gets involved. An old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Glokta, Jezal, and Logen a whole lot more difficult....

Incredible narration

This is my first re read of The First Law, and I'm so glad I opted for the audiobook version. Steven Pacey deserves an Academy Award for Best Audiobook Narration. This is the an absolute must.

shaker start, but soon becomes engrossing

almost stopped listening after 15 minutes as it seemed to me the narrator was way over dramatic for what was actually happening, but once the inquisitor arrived, I was hooked.
The narrator is brilliant, and I am putting my initial reaction down to the jarring style compared to the last book I listened too.
highly recommended for it's diverse and interesting characters and a page turning plot. the world could be a bit more vivid, but in fairness that's probsbly just me struggling to find a criticism.

a bit violent and a bit too much magic but fantastic characters all bought to life by wonderful narration. And VERY funny...

You got to be realistic about awesome books

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. the story an characters are excellently crafted with Steven Pacey breathing an extra layer of depth and personality into it all.

The world is grim, rife with inequality and violence. No character is 'good' as each has their own dark traits but this makes them more relatable. There are many opportunities to laugh and to acknowledge the growth of characters.

The only reason I give the story 4 out 5 is because I had difficulty getting into the book. Glocter was hard to stomach at first and I was confused by what was happening to Logan (as there was no explanation of what flatheads are, making me think I had skipped a book). but once the story got going I could not stop listening.

Cannot recommend highly enough.

Smashing!

Like a few other people have said a tad slow at the start, but give it a few hours and you won't be disappointed!

Excellent setting and story

I was looking for a fantasy series to read whilst waiting for the Winds of Winter. I have to say I found this excellent on every level - great characters, interesting setting and really compelling story. It had me hooked and I quickly purchased the other books in the series and the short story collections. The audiobook version is wonderful - I would completely recommend this.

Brilliant

I read a lot of fantasy fiction, but I had never come across Joe Abercrombie before. I gave the book a try bested on previous reviews. This book blew me away, it was fantastic. The characters are brilliant and the story is even better. The narrator is excellent and really brings the whole thing to life. Easily five stars.
