Summary

Inquisitor Glokta, a crippled and bitter relic of the last war, former fencing champion turned torturer, is trapped in a twisted and broken body - not that he allows it to distract him from his daily routine of torturing smugglers.

Nobleman, dashing officer and would-be fencing champion Captain Jezal dan Luthar is living a life of ease by cheating his friends at cards. Vain and shallow, the biggest blot on his horizon is having to get out of bed in the morning to train with obsessive and boring old men. And Logen Ninefingers, an infamous warrior with a bloody past, is about to wake up with plans to settle a blood feud with Bethod, the new King of the Northmen, once and for all - ideally by running away from it.

But as he's discovering, old habits die hard....especially when Bayaz gets involved. An old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Glokta, Jezal, and Logen a whole lot more difficult....

Well-drawn characters, great narration

If you could sum up The Blade Itself in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, intriguing, well-narrated

What did you like best about this story?

The thoughts of inquisitor Glokta!

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Inquisitor Glokta made me laugh out loud! As did the Bloody Nine on occasion.

Any additional comments?

So many terrific characters in this book, it's hard to pick out a favourite, but it has to be Glokta for his little sarcastic asides. Steven Pacey reads absolutely perfectly for all the characters, giving each their own vocal tics. I've already downloaded the rest of the trilogy - can't wait to listen to them.

What can be said, its perfect novel, it's my favourite trilogy of all time. each character a masterclass in flawed character heroics.

Steven Pacey narrating is just outstanding! He brings the excellent story writing of Joe Abercrombie to life. One of the best audiobooks I have listened to.

Say one thing about Joe Abercrombie…

Say he tells a great story.

Brilliant character, story and Narration!
The author will make you become very attached to every character in this book even though most of them are morally questionable and down right horrible.

A bloody cut or nine above most fantasy novels.

My introduction to Joe Abercrombie’s writing. Good pacing and enjoyable characters make this book an entertaining read. Looking forward to reading the remainder of the series.

Struggled to get into it but then I was HOOKED

The absolutely brilliant narrator, Steven Pacey, really helps brings this story to life.

Abercrombie has made the character 3 dimensional and ensures that you get to know each main characters behavior and internal conflicts on an intimate level.

I found the first few chapters quite depressing and grim but I stayed with it and glad I did!

I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys an immerse fantasy tale.

Legendary Storytelling

I have never laughed so much in a fantasy book before. This is just one example of the stellar story telling that Joe Abercrombie was able to deliver. The other things he delivered in the blade itself was: an engaging story full of intrigue and mystery, rip roaring action and lastly characters to care about. The only problem is that I didn't read this a decade ago! Will read the entire saga!

Anyone who likes fantasy must read this book, you are unlikely to find many books that can surpass it.
