Summary

In a galaxy tied together by the magic of the elite Jump Magi, Damien Montgomery is a newly graduated member of their number. With no family or connections to find a ship, he is forced into service on an interstellar freighter known to be hunted by pirates. When he takes drastic action to save the Blue Jay from their pursuers, he sets in motion a sequence of events beyond his control and attracts enemies on both sides of the law.

A good, simple yarn.

I'm not going to bore you with anything like a synopsis. All you will need to know is that whilst I have really enjoyed myself listening to this audio book, it will not win awards for depth of characterisation or plot. That is, of itself, a plus because you will find yourself engaged, and entertained, without too much effort. Sometimes a good, simple yarn is all that is required. Fans of Firefly will be comfortable in the background to this story.

Not to my liking

The story was a bit week and disjointed for me and the narrator did no more than read words without feeling

A really good mixture of sci fi and magic

If you could sum up Starship's Mage Omnibus in three words, what would they be?

Definetly a sci fi romp but with a twist, einstienan physics exist ergo no ftl so instead humanity has developed (through a nasty eugenics programme in the past and only briefly referenced in the book) mages who amongst other things can physically move a starship in space 1light year at a time. The author creates a universe with all good and bad that humanity has to offer and pulls you along at a good pace which left me wanting more....

how can the narrator be so good with voices and so bad with the general narration... his voice all but dissappears in between conversations and he sounds SO BORED. Sadly..not downloading another

Good story, didn't like the narrator.

Interesting story overall but the narrator kept speaking really, really softly when describing the dialogue. Enough so that I had to have the text up to see what was being said. You know, when you start a really long sentence and run out of breath at the end? Bugged me enough to write this review!

Good story idea but some things grated

This is definitely a boys book the casual sexism grated on me as did the bizarre descriptions of anyone non white which was mentioned at every opportunity why? It distracted from getting to know these characters. However bigoted I might be I hope after getting to know some who does not look or sound like me, I would begin to see more than the differences between us. It felt like diversity by numbers.

Abandoned attempt at a magic system

The opening is the only interesting part. It was the premise of the magic system and the cleverness of changing the ship's matrix that convinced me it's a great listen. Then it nosedived and by the end crashed and burned. The plot turned into a generic action thing that would be at home in a cop show or whatever. It's not sci-fi except in setting and it's not fantasy, it's sort of military blah. To top it off, it's full of excessively imposing military men, each more manly than the other, possibly in a contest to overcompensate for the author's self evaluated shortcomings. There's a bit of idiot plotting where the mage doesn't try to convince the law enforcement mages he can see the matrix, and they have no idea that's possible. There is also a romantic subplot, lol, meaning a hookup with a faceless woman with zero interesting lines. Stewart has no idea what interesting means. It's impossible to tell who's the protagonist as interminable page time is given to the captain and the uninteresting "they're trying to board us!" and "it's a trap!" plots. Of the 10h, it's 8h too long. There was just enough plot for a cool short story with the mage discovering his unusual power and saving the ship.

The narrative is chock full of toxicity. Every woman has a pretty smile. Every man is a Man. Guns are used everywhere instead of the meager magic system that was promised and not delivered, and the narrator is obviously enamored with guns believing that caliber and round capacity mean good storytelling. Everyone is either promising sex out of flat relationships that have nothing else going for them, or is evaluating the matches for everyone else (but only cis matches). Every POC is overly defined by their dark skin and their hugely epicanthic folds. There's a star system that's The Only Truly Free because it doesn't have bureaucracy (meaning they're a disorganized dystopia that the writer isn't aware of). What they have instead of the dreaded administrative system is bounty hunters who kill you in the street, but that's Alright Because They Respect Your Right To Self Defense. Many of characters are knuckledraggers who think magic is boring and too nerdy, and they're basically a bunch of dumb jocks sold to a crowd of readers who are interested in magic and sci-fi and don't consider them boring. How un self aware can this author possibly be?! The jokes amount to "har har you owe me a beer" and burps. It's like the author thought he wrote his way into a situation where he can finally be himself again and drop any pretense that he's going to deliver on that original promise that there will be clever magic.

Gets one star for the abandoned attempt at a magic system.

Headless ratrace through galaxy

The stupidest captain in Scifi results from writer driving the plot and using the characters as means to an end, instead of the characters being 'real' and driving the plot. Rat race with string of meaningless narrow escapes and lot of shooting.
