If you could sum up Sixty-One Nails in three words, what would they be?

Neverwhere meets Fayre

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well, i'd say the protagonist Nial, i think every decision he made i would of done the same, and i found him to be a very believable character, given the very unbelievable situation he finds himself in.

Have you listened to any of Nigel Carrington’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not that i recall, but this was very good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Probably the hammer scene , no spoilers though.

Any additional comments?

I would have to say that after going through as much of the fantasy section in Audible as i could find this one is up there with the better of them. Its not quite as good as lets say Name of the Wind, but it's certainly as good as the likes of Neverwhere... i hope this review inspires some people to give it a go, you don't be disappointed.

Engaging and Entertaining

A great book; well written, well constructed, and surprisingly credible. Much more imaginative than many other examples of the genre.

Sixty-one nails

The plot is reasonable, but definitely a slow burn. Being the first book in a series, and the first by the author, some allowance should be made. Even so, the writing is wordy, to say the least and the 13 hours could easily have fitted into ten. It is not necessary to share the complete, very slow (and often frankly idiotic) thought processes of each participant in an argument! This is not helped by the very slow tempo which, even at 1.15 speed, dragged. The narration is good in other aspects.
I made it through this book but unless I can get the others on special offer, I will stick to Ben Aaronovitch and Jodi Taylor's excellent series in this genre.

The story moved along nicely without being predictable, drawn in by the interesting plot and likeable characters.

Great, fluent narration - brought the characters to life.

The parts where the two main characters explored their feelings to each other as their relationship become closer.

Intriguing and original

Although there are elements to this story which any fantasy reader will recognise: a secret world of the supernatural living alongside us, a character who is unaware that he is part of this world and who comes to discover his true power and significance thanks to a sometimes reluctant guide, I found this novel to be handled with much originality. I enjoyed the maturity of the characters (a great relief after all the teen-fic and kid-fic we get bombarded with currently) and the detail to the supernatural world and its deft interweaving with our own easily recognisable world. The narration was extremely enjoyable although accents did wander sometimes (quite often they completely walked off, did their own thing and came back a while later well rested occasionally) and I wouldn't hesitate to listen to something else from this narrator, this author or indeed another pairing of the two.

I have read the paperback books and the audiobook series is as good as the books.

Better than the book!

I know that sounds daft, but some books are better read yourself and some are better read to you, like the Pickwick Papers for instance. Reading is good, but listening is sometimes better. Most enjoyable.

Fresh modern fantasy

Would you listen to Sixty-One Nails again? Why?

I’ll definitely be listening to Sixty-One Nails again, but not before I finish the other books in the series.

What other book might you compare Sixty-One Nails to, and why?

Sixty-One Nails is set in modern times like Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London. I thoroughly enjoyed the worlds created by both stories.

What does Nigel Carrington bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The voice acting is excellent. Nigel Carrington’s voice is warm and expressive without being overpowering. His crisp British accent is perfect for this world. I’ll be looking out for more titles narrated by Nigel Carrington’s.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Difficult question, I’m normally disappointed by film adaptations of books. Therefore I’d probably give the film the really original tag line “Good, but not as good as the book”

Looking for something special? This is it.

Been waiting for a while for something a little special to listen too and finally found it in this author and a fresh, exciting story. Brilliantly narrated by Nigel Carrington,I found it hard to stop listening to this crack tale. Already have the second story to listen too but want to savour my time immersed in it. Get it and enjoy, I promise you wont regret it.
